Daniel Morgan once took 499 lashes from a British cat-o’-nine-tails…and lived to joke about it.

During the French and Indian War, a British lieutenant struck him with the flat of his sword. Morgan knocked the officer out cold with one punch.

The sentence was 500 lashes. Usually a death sentence.

Morgan stayed conscious the entire time, counting every stroke. He later claimed the drummer miscounted and only gave him 499.

“King George still owes me one,” he would say for the rest of his life.

Years later, the night before Cowpens, he lifted his shirt and showed his men the scars. Then he went out and destroyed Banastre Tarleton’s force.
