RCP8.5/SSP5-8.5 being retired really is a big deal. It was by-far the most mentioned scenario in the last two IPCC impacts and vulnerability assessment reports (WGII). A large fraction--probably a majority--of scary climate news headlines from the last decade come from studies using it.
Current policies are still headed for >2C, there are climate-sensitivity developments to watch, and there's lots more work to be done to solve the climate problem. But retiring 8.5 is a major shift in climate impact science.
@pseudoerasmus I'm probably totally on line with the idea (at the transition phase) that (higher) inequality goes along with growth/wealth; but could you say why you think that is? I'm really curious. Oh, and why not post the link?
Xi Jinping just made his first climate-focused, internation speech in several years. While he said little that is new in substance, Xi's speeches are always important signals of the leadership's priorities. 🧵
Summary of the DOGE whistleblower claim (because the thread is long and reads like a script):
- DOGE gets “tenant owner” rights in Azure, with full control over NLRB cloud infra – no logs, no questions
- Logs and security controls are disabled (Network Watcher off, no recordkeeping)
- External GitHub tools (for scraping/bruteforcing) installed inside gov cloud systems
- 10+ GB exfiltrated from NxGen (legal case system) via shady containers + expired tokens
- IPs from Russia try logging in 15 minutes after accounts are created, using valid creds
- MFA disabled, conditional access rules changed, all unapproved and unlogged
- Azure bills spike 8% with no new resources (suggesting ephemeral high-cost VMs spun up)
- Drone surveillance photo + threat note taped to whistleblower’s door
- CISA’s response team was about to investigate – and got told to stand down
Now tell me:
Does that sound plausible to you?
Or is this just high-grade cybersecurity fan fiction dressed up as whistleblowing?
Personally, I’m curious how much of this will actually hold up when someone starts digging for real.
"Oh ... it's only China". Or how to make the sudden decoupling of the world’s two largest economies seem like a relief.
Chartbook 371 just dropped. Pls forgive the typo in the title of the original emailed version. High-speed early morning typing.

As a someone who translates ideas into math for a living, I noticed something weird about the tariff formula that I haven't seen anybody else talk about. 🧵
