World’s first rigorous clinical trial of treatments for bubonic #plague:
UK & #Madagascar researchers find treatment at home with oral antibiotics highly effective & safe low-cost alternative to injections

Fantastic to see this published - first ever trial of treatment for bubonic plague
Huge thanks to the wonderful team in Madagascar #InstitutPasteur and our funders #FCDO#Wellcome
An important but incredibly challenging study - everyone deserves to benefit from science.
Data on treatments for bubonic plague are limited. In this open-label, randomized, controlled trial in Madagascar, ciprofloxacin monotherapy was noninferior to a standard aminoglycoside–ciprofloxacin regimen. Full IMASOY trial results and Research Summary: https://t.co/N42b8KPRxE
Fantastic morning discussing pandemic prevention, One Health and system-wide approaches. Now debating the Pandemic Agreement and what it means in practice. https://t.co/Oo2dAJLTmw
In a collaborative new study, researchers at @PSIOxford have partnered with global colleagues to discover how #AI could accelerate infectious disease research and help to prepare the world for the next pandemic 🔬🦠🤖

There seem to be THREE simultaneous filovirus outbreaks - Marburg in Tanzania, Ebola in DRC (most likely culprit Zaire Ebolavirus) and Sudan Ebolavirus in Uganda.
We need adequately funded public health and research and development programmes and support.
Permanent Secretary, Dr. @DianaAtwine addresses the media this afternoon.
“An outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease has been confirmed in Kampala, Uganda following confirmation from 3 National Reference Laboratories.”
Although sotrovimab likely to have no useful activity against current SARS-CoV-2 variants, these data, along with the RECOVERY casirivimab-imdevimab
result, show that mAbs which effectively neutralise can benefit some hospitalised patients.
🔥 RECOVERY sotrovimab result now available.
Despite widespread vaccination and natural immunity, sotrovimab reduced mortality in COVID-19 inpatients with high levels of SARS-CoV-2 antigen.

As #Tanzania responds to the confirmed outbreak of #Marburg virus disease, @WHO is working closely with the national health authorities to reinforce control measures to halt the outbreak as soon as possible and protect the health of the population.

Marburg raises its head again: so soon after Rwanda outbreak. There are no approved treatments or vaccines for Marburg - from each outbreak we need to incrementally gather the data we need for effective control and treatment.
WHO informed its Member States and International Health Regulation State Parties of an outbreak of suspected Marburg Virus Disease in the Kagera region of #Tanzania
So far, we are aware of 9 suspected cases incl. 8 deaths across 2 districts.
WHO risk assessment of this suspected outbreak:
National level: High
Regional level: High
Global level: Low

Controversial COVID study that promoted unproven treatment retracted after four-year saga https://t.co/BFLsOIvZA4
Ironic that the co-authors complain they were “victims of cyber-harassment” - they should try being on the receiving end of HCQ believers, including Raoult himself.
An extraordinarily strong lesson on the importance of good science, critical thinking, and being truly objective.
The damage done to trust and to patients by the hydroxycholoroquine debacle should never be repeated.
Would love to know the reasons for retraction.
Extraordinary: Raoult’s damaging paper on hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 finally retracted.
So grateful to all the people who helped with the RECOVERY trial, allowing us to debunk the myth of hydroxychloroquine for severe COVID-19

Influenza going up in the UK. For those involved in the RECOVERY trial of influenza treatments - please try to enrol patients. If this season is short and sharp, we will have a limited time window for recruitment.
