The Day Paul Tracy Almost Joined Formula 1 🏎️ 🇨🇦.

Back in September 1994, the motorsport world witnessed one of the most fascinating "what if" moments of the decade. Paul Tracy, then a rising young star in the IndyCar series with Team Penske, hopped into the cockpit of Michael Schumacher’s championship-winning Benetton B194 at the Estoril circuit in Portugal.

The test was personally engineered by F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, who wanted to poach top IndyCar talent to boost F1's global appeal. To everyone's amazement, Tracy absolutely flew. His lap times would have qualified him fourth on the grid for that year's Portuguese Grand Prix, comfortably beating Benetton’s regular second drivers.

However, Tracy faced a massive cultural shock. He later revealed that Schumacher’s car setup was razor-sharp and incredibly difficult to handle. On top of that, Tracy’s robust build meant he could barely squeeze into the tight cockpit custom-molded for the German champion.

Ultimately, the dream move crashed into F1 politics. Benetton boss Flavio Briatore demanded that Tracy sign a restrictive multi-year management contract before even touching the track. Tracy refused to lock himself into a bad financial deal. Despite Ecclestone stepping in to force Briatore to let Tracy test anyway, the contract dispute couldn't be resolved.

Tracy walked away, returning to a highly successful and lucrative career in North America.
