But one must have hope that India’s presently absent elite take up the task it abdicated, of civilizing its people and running a nation, and for that must have a genuinely positive feeling for the qualities of this elite and its people, that it is a diamond in the rough.

Surely the thing to do would be codifying clear orthographic standards in a lightly-enhanced Latin script, with an emphasis on things like availability of versatile font families, standardized spellings, figuring out how English punctuation is best imported to maximize readability, etc.?

Ataturk was the only nationalist remotely serious about this. Where in the Vedas does something clearly analogous to the modern practice of surnames/“family names” even show up in a way that reveals the women kept hers? By the way, what is the woman’s surname anyway? Keeping track of families isn’t a “British” thing. Families there and here are tagged by the Husband - if the meaning of gotra and, any part of the Orthodox Hindu sacrament of marriage were unclear to you.
