This is a dangerous development by all measures…

And it highlights a dysfunction that public administrators fail to address BECAUSE WE DONT THINK IN SYSTEMS!!!

And this isn’t a partisan take. I will explain…

There is a market for scrap metal in Nigeria and it has a huge supply side gap.

The gap exists because, Ajaokuta steel mill and Delta Steel Aladja, to name just two, are comatose. That’s a whole other story…

Now that gap means the few smelters and the likes in operation are either going to have to import billets or coils for production, or they would have to find scrap metal in the country to feed their processes.

So, with demand so created, supply is stimulated.

But there’s little to no regulation and if it does exist, enforcement is…anyhow.

… nobody on the regulatory side is saying, hey! You can’t buy or sell THIS or THAT kind of scrap….or hey! Here are the standards for engagement in this market , you can’t buy Scrap metal that’s not traceable and non compliant to XYZ protocols…

So everybody and anybody who can find scrap metals and aggregate them has a willing and ready off-take ecosystem to trade with.

That’s how bridge ramparts and guardrails become -scrap metal. Thats how manhole covers on our roads become ‘scrap metal’.

It’s happening all over the place. This 👇🏾 is lagos….

Sometime ago a popular influencer in the east made a live video at the new Onitsha - Asaba Niger bridge showing how steel joints had been stripped in the middle of one lane on the bridge…that thing weighed tons- removing it required industrial equipment…but they did it.

What does this tell you ?

There is an organized commercial extraction racket around stripping metal from public infrastructure.

The players include the offtakers who run identifiable businesses at known locations around the country. They are the chief enablers and instigators.

The aggregators. They have supply contracts with the offtakers. They run scrap yards where they collect, sort, weigh and package scars metal for delivery. They’re also not ‘invisible’.

The collectors: they include the cart pushers who you find on the streets shouting ‘condemn iron?!’ During the day.
And the ones who go to dump sites to sort through trash.

And the ones who go to bridges at night to vandalize guardrails, joints and manhole covers…
Or construction sites to steal your rods and beams and cables… I have seen videos of someone’s house stripped of cabling, lintels broken and rods taken out…

…and apparently there’s a new breed that literally will just take the damn bridge apart to get to the rods and beams…

All of this persists because the people serving in government who are responsible for designing programmes and processes of GOVERNANCE & ADMINISTRATION DO NOT THINK IN SYSTEMS!!!

And no…it’s not because they’re corrupt. It’s the absence of resilient systems that’s created a breeding ground for the runaway corruption we have.

it is possible to have a New Nigeria that is run by administrators who think in systems and build resilient institutions that serve the needs of Nigerians.

The other day when I said Nigerians are a very low IQ people, some people came for me. Is this not evidence of a low IQ population?

The fact that there are some brilliant Nigerians pulling their weight around the world does not negate the fact that the large majority of the populace in Nigeria are either plain stupid or educated and still stupid.

There are just too many low-IQ people roaming around, and any real change has to start with mass education and enlightenment.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
