Every campaign that competes against NYC-DSA, no matter their ideology, even if their candidate is an immigrant/child of immigrants, will eventually deploy lazy nativist arguments that quickly slip into attacks on immigrant New Yorkers. They have nothing else to offer voters.
I saw chaos inside and outside of the ICE detention center Delaney Hall today. Detainees protesting the lack of due process, the disgusting food and poor treatment while their families and advocates stood outside calling for help. Instead of engaging with me and others about the poor conditions, ICE sent in an armored vehicle and a line of armed agents that only poured gasoline on the fire. Civilians were tackled and restrained, and agents fired pepper balls and spray into the crowd. This is more of the same lawlessness we’ve seen elsewhere around the country. Our country deserves accountability. Our country deserves the humane treatment of every person here. In fact, our Constitution demands this. What I witnessed and experienced today was shameful. Delaney Hall is a failure; it’s this administration’s failure. The only way to make this right for our communities is to shut it down and make sure the failures we’ve seen never happen again.
Andy, you clearly don’t understand how America or the law works.
1.Zohran Mamdani is an American citizen. He was born in Kampala, Uganda to Indian parents, but he immigrated legally as a child and is now a naturalized U.S. citizen. Under the U.S. Constitution, you cannot “send back” an American citizen to another country. Deportation applies only to non-citizens.
2.He’s a state lawmaker, not a theocrat. Mamdani is a New York State Assemblymember, elected by American voters in his district. He swore an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of New York, neither of which allow religious law to override civil law.
3.Sharia law is not being proposed anywhere in U.S. governance. This “Sharia law” panic is a recycled right-wing conspiracy that has been debunked for over a decade. American courts operate under U.S. law, and any attempt to replace that with a religious code would be unconstitutional under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
https://t.co/xR0i0LHMNV cannot use religion as a pretext for persecution. The DOJ cannot investigate or punish someone for being Muslim, nor for being of Ugandan or Indian heritage. That would be blatant religious and racial discrimination, exactly what the Constitution forbids.
So when you say you’re “fighting to take our country back,” what you’re really saying is that you don’t understand the Constitution you claim to defend. Mamdani is doing exactly what Americans are supposed to do , participating in democracy, not dismantling it.
If you want to “take the country back,” start by reading the document it was founded on.
Just outrageously, insanely unconstitutional for an official government account to say this about religion. Jefferson and Madison are rolling over in their graves.
