Incredible that "Why should [profession] go on strike? My job sucks and pays like shit but I never complain!" is a wildly popular and respected opinion in this country
People talk about Twitter not being “real life” which is true but then you talk to extremely offline people and they tell you how their brother’s friend’s co-worker saw a panhandler get into a 2023 Cadillac and drive off and you realize offline info exchanges are also not real
"my son turned out fine"
ma'am your daughter is bootstrapping gentoo on a librebooted thinkpad x230 while arguing with internet strangers about free software
@DukeMcFrenzy @gringusmcdingus@borgposting@ArmyStrang Agree! The Doc is an obnoxious asshole at first but he becomes an absolute LEGEND by the end. The ECH, beamed across interstellar dialup to thwart a Romulan plot with Andy Dick, doing the same again to operate on and literally save his creator's life, novelist, he even has a son!
In "Stop Talking to Each Other and Start Buying Things: Three Decades of Survival in the Desert of Social Media," @catvalente is characteristically brilliant about this subject. It is one of the best essays you'll read this month:

@atomicthumbs I remember seeing this at some point but had to look it up. The rationale seems kind of dubious. At least curl and wget have your back https://t.co/YFp66lo4mc
Reading Freud is 5% mind blowing life changing brilliance and 95% stories about shit that happened to him or his friends and how he's basing hardcore psychoanalytic theory on that
had a recent discussion w a friend about how private equity has moved into both medicine and journalism to squeeze out the profits and make the people who got into it with aspirations of making the world better feel like cogs in an evil machine. funnnn
My self-driving Tesla crosses four lanes of freeway traffic in an attempt to jackknife an oncoming subaru. In the final seconds of my life, I’m filling out a captcha to try and regain control of the vehicle, but I don’t know which squares in the grid are “woke”
The point of this is fairly simple, if you don't truly understand something or you are unsure of the impact or even if you suspect you have an incomplete picture then pick 2 way doors. It doesn't matter whether we're talking about climate change or pandemics or anything.
I think of things in 1 way or 2 way doors i.e. is this a choice we can reverse or not?
China can always reverse its zero covid policy. Zero covid is a two way door.
In the UK, we chose a 1 way door with covid becoming endemic. We can't reverse that ... well, not easily.
I see all these kids in high school asking how to get a career tightening cyberbolts but I glance down in shame and have to tell them all the bolts have been tightened and they used cyber loctite 😥
I'm being run ragged at Twitter right now, I have to dash ahead of Elon whenever he comes round the office and warn the coders to tab over to Microsoft office, because if he doesn't see Clippy he starts throwing chairs
it's almost like all along when people said (unproven, and wrong) things like "kids can't get covid" it was a needlessly risky and destructive basis for making decisions, and like we _could_ take measures to massively reduce covid spread https://t.co/tCZkFzLzmC
