ALLEGATIONS OF HARASSMENT AND ASSAULTS AGAINST PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES - THE WAY FORWARD.

Career-altering allegations from women appear to be on the increase against notable male football stars. This is a complex and important topic that has gained significant attention in recent years. Below are my thoughts on this discussion.

Allegations are, at best, allegations until they are proven. Also, when an allegation is made, an accused person is deemed innocent until such an allegation is proven to establish the guilt of the accused person.

While it is important to take such allegations seriously, provide support to the ladies who come forward with such allegations, and create a safe environment to enable other ladies to speak out, it is also important that the impact of such information on the career of such athlete, which includes loss of sponsorship endorsement, suspension by team and reputation damage, be also considered. The importance of a prompt and thorough investigation, together with an open, transparent, and fair treatment of all parties involved, can not be overstated.

Over the years, media coverage and public opinion have played a very important role in swaying the outcomes of these cases. Social media, in particular, has been shown to amplify allegations and opinions, sometimes leading to trial by public opinion before even investigations conclude and legal proceedings commence. The recent case of Mason Greenwood is instructive.

It has become necessary to strike a balance between protecting victims' rights and ensuring fair treatment for the accused. The existing legal and institutional frameworks, including sports organizations and regulators, need to urgently work on creating a balance.

Going forward, I will suggest that efforts should be made to educate athletes, coaches, and organizations about issues relating to consent, boundaries, and respectful behaviour.

In conclusion, it is suggested that the process for dealing with allegations of harassment and assaults against high-profile athletes should be fair, transparent, and focused on seeking justice while also addressing broader cultural and systemic issues related to harassment and assault.

I hope that the truth on the allegations against Antony is revealed promptly.

I still can't understand how a person whose credentials are being challenged in courts both in Nigeria and United States of America, was given a platform by the Nigeria Bar Association, to speak to lawyers in its conference whose theme is "Getting it right".

What has happened to our Bar? Did the leadership of our bar, ably led by Yakubu Maikyau, SAN., and the Local Organizing Committee not think this through?

All circumstances leading to the declaration of this person as president are being challenged in court through three separate live and ongoing petitions. His credentials, particularly his degree allegedly from Chicago State University, are also being challenged.

Why does it appear that we are deliberately getting it wrong in a conference with the theme "getting it right".
