@Tyler_A_Harper Most Colleges and Universities are in the housing and resort amenities industry, with education as an add on. Covid threatened that. AI does not. But in any case, the romantic notion of education is long dead, and academia itself is entirely to blame.
@kitten_beloved Exactly. I hear people promote travel as some kind of act of intellectual and spiritual advancement, but every selfish ass I’ve seen go to Europe comes back a selfish ass.
@robbystarbuck I’ve said this elsewhere: she IS the University. Her views represent the majority, not just the faculty. The director of housing, the accessibly director, and the technology director likely share the same views. All the apples are rotten now. There is no fix within.
@LocasaleLab Here’s the thing: she IS the University. Her views represent the majority, not just the faculty. The director of housing, the accessibly director, and the technology director likely share the same views. All the apples are rotten now. There is no top down fix.
@ianmSC Most people don’t understand that it really is all broken. These people have all flowed upwards in higher ed. They’re Deans now. A Provost here and there. And unlike the white men before them, they will *only* hire their own. There will be no mandatory training the other way.
@MeghanEMurphy My instincts are Luddite-y as well, but AI is overall positive. It makes the laborious mundane a breeze and can help improve thinking. It makes smart people smarter. But like so many other things, perhaps social media included, everyone on the planet shouldn’t have access.
@PAHoyeck Nothing. Anyone who is going to understand any work in the field needs to come to it voluntarily. If they’re curious, it doesn’t matter where you begin. I’d tell them they’re doing philosophy whether they like it or not, anyway. Learn more or don’t.
@bernardtjoy Only make it more rarified and special. People will seek it out and know it when they see it. Do not fear AI, dear creative. Your work has probably always been garbage. Now you can blame AI that you aren’t well known and beloved.
@NEETOCRACY If it makes you feel any better, practically every job is bullshit. I got my dream job. It sucks. The people suck. It’s just as meaningless as any other job I had - and it makes it worse that people there feel they’re doing meaningful work. Just get paid.
It’s been inevitable that the formal accommodations in education flowed to all aspects of our society. “You can’t punish me for being late, I have an accommodation.” “You have to excuse the mother who killed her kids. What she needed was an accommodation.”
We are already here: Professors use AI to make assignments, students use AI to complete them, and finishing the circle, AI grades it all automatically. Both groups can toast each other by the campus pool while the computers crunch away. Sorry, facilities. The toilet is clogged.
