Just as a reminder, Democrats, Obama fired generals too, due to policy disputes, strategic disagreements regarding the Middle East, or misconduct,
Significant military firings under Obama:
Gen. David McKiernan
Gen. Stanley McChrystal
Gen. James Mattis
Lt Gen. Mike Flynn
Maj Gen Mike Carey
Vice Adm. Tim Giardina
And 194 other high-ranking officials.
An officer reform story. Courtesy of @grok UNHINGED. And it’s pretty unhinged indeed:
There’s a quiet lie every bureaucracy loves to jerk off to:
“Young officers don’t influence the War Department. Shut up and color.”
1940–41. America is sprinting toward a war it can smell coming. A Reserve major — S. P. Simpson, Harvard Law professor turned active-duty officer — is actually in the goddamn Army dealing with the Organized Reserves every day.
What does he see? A parade of “superannuated Regular Army officers” — old, crusty, checked-out fossils who’ve been riding a desk since the Spanish-American War, sucking up oxygen and killing readiness. Dead. Fucking. Wood.
Simpson doesn’t write a polite memo. He doesn’t kiss the ring. He grabs a pen and fires off a letter to his buddy Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter that basically says: “These motherfuckers are fossils and they’re gonna get kids killed.”
Frankfurter, being based, doesn’t bury it. He forwards that shit straight into the White House military aide pipeline.
It lands on the desk of General George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff of the entire U.S. Army.
Now watch what happens next, because this is where modern Pentagon bitches would have a stroke.
Marshall doesn’t write back: “Major, know your lane.” “Tone it down.” “Limited perspective.”
Nah. Marshall reads it… and goes full savage.
His official reply:
“Major Simpson’s criticisms stem from the fact that his Army contacts have been principally with superannuated Regular Army officers on duty with the Organized Reserves. I frankly agree that most of our senior officers on such duty are deadwood and should be eliminated from the service as rapidly as possible. Steps to do this will be taken promptly under the authority of the recent legislation.”
He didn’t defend the institution. He didn’t soften the language. He weaponized the complaint.
At the exact moment he was ramming through the “plucking board” to fire hundreds of colonels and generals, Simpson’s letter became Exhibit A. Proof. Ammo. That’s how real reform actually happens.
Not by pretending everything’s fine. Not by telling truth-tellers to “stay in their lane.” Not by protecting rank over reality.
A serious military asks one question when criticism hits: “Is it true?”
If the answer is yes, you use it like a goddamn flamethrower.
Rank is for giving orders. It is NOT a monopoly on seeing the obvious.
The second an organization starts believing insight only flows from the top down, it’s already rotting from the inside.
Major Simpson didn’t change the Army alone. But he proved that one pissed-off major with eyes on the ground can hand the boss the exact truth he needs to start swinging the axe.
And Marshall? He swung.
Hard.
Sorry Jonah. I actually sat in the room for the first half of the movie.
For 24 polite years, Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama diplomatically asked NATO members to increase defense spending. For 24 years, it was one excuse after another, all focused in Western Europe on how they wish they could spend more, but their social welfare spending priorities wouldn’t let them. In other words, you the US will spend on defense and protect us.
Along comes rude Donald Trump. Finally, someone made clear that if Europe kept freeloading the US was done. It took a bill in the China shop to move Europe. Diplomacy failed. Trump prevailed. That’s reality whether you or I like it.
NATO self-withered after 75 years. If Spain, England, Italy and France won’t spend what’s necessary to have a real military, it’s time for something new.
So SecWar Pete Hegseth just fired Maj. Gen. William Green Jr., the US Army’s (now former) Chief of Chaplains.
I have zero insider information on this, but I have my own theories as to why it happened.
Green’s most important event as the Chief of Chaplains was to produce the United States Army’s “Spiritual Fitness Guide.”
Published in July of 2025, Stars & Stripes wrote an article on this with a link to the guide.
(I’ll put all related links in a comment email one below.)
I’ll save you the trouble of clicking on that link — it goes to the US Army’s website, and it’s “404 Page Not Found.”
That kind of explains a lot, doesn’t it?
So I went and found a full copy of that “Guide” elsewhere (in, of all places, a “Military Atheist” website; link in the post below).
Go check it out. Do a word search for the word “God.” Go ahead. Do it. It shows up exactly ONCE. How can you have a guide to spiritual fitness without mentioning God?????
But what that “guide" DOES TALK about is a bunch on New Age gobbledygook.
Let me give you a taste:
"The Soldier’s Spirit lies at the intersection of external influences (stimulus) and applied behavior (response). It is the vital junction that supports the weight of life and drives Soldier action. In a relatable way, the Soldier’s spirit is much like a compass in life, providing substance to the direction that they take in life and the decisions they make. This reality makes understanding and developing the Soldier's spirit crucial, as the direction of a Soldier ultimately shapes the direction and well-being of the Army.”
The primary mission of the Chaplain Corps is to “provide religious support” to soldiers (from their official mission statement).
Yet the US Army’s “Spiritual Fitness Guide” reads like it was written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono on a bender—not a word of encouragement for a soldier’s faith, but pages upon pages of New Age nonsense that makes Universalism sound like rational thought and really does imagine no religion.
Yeah, one does not need to understand why a man of faith like Pete Hegseth fired a wishy washy New Age Pharisee like Green.
