@CarlaBarrett@sainsburys@nectar What I can't abide us having to do homework before I shop. Morrisons used to have an app that you had to look for the available offers each week, look at the available offers, and remember to pick up that item. I stopped shopping there. This offer at @sainsburys is very similar.
@SonyaParkes@LibDems I agree with an appointed House. We dont need more campaigning for another election on party lines. I suggest a maximum term of (say) 15 years.
A little Friday musing...
I recently had the good fortune to be able to spend a couple of months in Tokyo (a place where I'd previously lived for 15 years).
People talk about Japan's stagnating economy. What few acknowledge (or maybe even realise?) is that it has stagnated at a very high level, one which the UK is nowhere near reaching, and probably never will now.
Japan's naysayers point to its stagnation as a sign of failure, of weakness. But that's like mocking Usain Bolt for not being able to run any faster than he can.
Everything just works. The place is spotless. Food is cheap, and almost universally excellent. Public toilets are abundant and clean. Transport is punctual and cheap (albeit with a spectacular crush during rush hour). Bullet trains are FAST! There's mobile reception even in the deepest tunnels. Gigabit ethernet is commonplace. Tradespeople are available at the drop of a hat. Convenience stores offer an almost magical range and breadth of products and services. Healthcare is superb. And so on, and so on.
It's not all roses. Japan has its problems too, and plenty of them.
But it also offers a quality of life for the average person (as opposed to the wealthy) that we couldn't even dare to dream of in Britain.
Slovenia's center-left government is refunding thousands of Covid lockdown fines issued by the previous right-wing administration.
Justice Minister Dominika Švarc Pipan said repaying the fines would help to rebuild Slovenians' trust in the rule of law, "which was significantly undermined by the use of excessive and unconstitutional repression during the pandemic."
More governments need to do this -- and quickly.

@Lee4NED It is a trial and the outcomes are studied by the local university. See https://t.co/Mp4P1ugQty. The data shows:-Nine out of the 16 areas monitored show substantial improvement when comparing the trial period from Jan to March to the same period in 2022. Seems like a good idea.
@Lee4NED But if you read Oliver Coppard's letter, you can see that "levelling up" is just hot air. Not a serious proposal at all. https://t.co/cR70j70f3l
Yesterday @RishiSunak told @BBCLookNorth that his government were ‘investing more’ in buses in SY.
Today I’ve written to him to correct the record, to lay out the scale of the challenge facing our region and to explain how broken bus services are impacting our communities.

Science is very clear. It’s not net zero in 2050 that must be the headline goal, but cutting emissions before then, including 50% cut by 2030. Delaying action deepens peril for our children & grandchildren. Think Libya, Greece, mass migration & all the rest, & on a massive scale.
PM totally incoherent. It’s nonsense to keep saying he’s still committed to net zero by 2050 if he’s abandoning the steps to actually achieve it. It’s like saying he’s committed to putting out the fire at the same time as letting down all the tyres on the fire engines #NetZero
@RishiSunak An unnecessary jibe at EU trying to justify costly hard Brexit. Where I live in Eastern Europe beer is a third of the price of UK. The minimum excise duties set by EU and agreed by UK preBrexit are much lower than UK ones. Pity if UK public falls for this misleading claim.
@timfarron I don't agree with @timfarron. The Lords have a quite different role from the Commons - to make sure that proposed laws are sensible, internationaly legal and workable. I say they should be appointed on merit, for a maximum of (say) 15 years.
@Lee4NED I see that @Bren4Bassetlaw is similarly dismissing Bassetlaw's plan for a trial 4 day week. Why does the government feel it needs to interfere in local council decisions like this?
@TheSecretFF999@Bren4Bassetlaw .. not to mention the wider impact on the reduction in commuting, saving energy, overcrowding on buses and trains, less need for chilcare, etc etc.
