The interesting thing about art is its specificity - the particular inflection. The style. All art has a style, and the style is bound up with a work's meaning. The easiest way to access that style and that meaning is to imagine yourself making it.
Art is not that different from having a conversation with someone. The painter is telling you a story. What is their syntax, their vocabulary and inflection?
