We’re excited to welcome a talented new postdoctoral researcher, Monika Gonka, to the LEGEND group! She’ll be leading data-driven projects and supporting the team as a bioinformatics research assistant. Welcome aboard, Monika!
Shout out this #InternationalMensDay to Ahmed Alsayadi (@AAsayadi) and Nick Brittain — brilliant cancer researchers and all-round great humans. Your skill, drive, and good vibes make the LEGEND team what it is 💙
Our lab was delighted to host a visit from
@CR_UK fundraisers, campaigners, and patient advocates @DuncombeSue and Patrick McGuire. It was a pleasure to share our research, to give an insight into our daily work and highlight how CRUK support helps us move science forward.
Lisa Russell just wrote an insightful article for #CancerNews from @CR_UK where she takes us through the promise of super-enhancer biology and what it means for cancer. Read the whole article here:

Great day at the #ChildrensCancerRun inspiring young minds and raising money to support families through a cancer diagnosis and to fund vital cancer research here in the North East @ChildCancerNTH
Are you an Epigenetics enthusiast interested in Super-enhancer hijacking in blood cancer, using cutting edge techniques and harnessing the power of data generated from them? Join the team, as we have two 3-year PDRA posts currently advertised funded by CRUK, more info below!
Today, I had the privilege of organizing the NUCancer PGR Conference 24/25 alongside an amazing team! 🎉Excited to attend with my PhD buddy @phoebe__snow as part of the LEGEND group led by Dr. Lisa Russell. Huge thanks to our sponsors @ArimaGenomics, @abcam, and @VectorBuilder
On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re celebrating the women contributing their brilliant scientific skills to finding kinder & more effective treatments for blood cancer in children & young people.
Including the fabulous @LJRussell_Lab team 👏👏👏
On #WorldCancerDay we are happy to welcome another scientist to our team, @Dr_AhlamQ. She will focus on a subtype of leukaemia for which very little is known and together with the rest of the team she will work towards better treatments for patients suffering from blood cancer.
It’s #WorldKindnessDay2024
Ruby knew that kindness was the most important thing in the world & asked to be remembered by the motto Live Kindly Live Loudly
Please help us remember her today by doing something kind - for a person, animal or the planet
❤️
Honored to attend the North East Postgraduate Conference 2024 (#NEPG2024) and present my research poster! Great to connect with fellow PGR students and share insights. #Research#GradLife#conference
Transcription and Chromatin UK 2024 has been a huge success! We've seen an amazing range of engaging talks, posters and networking take place. Thank you to our great Programme Committee and attendees! See you at the next #BiochemEvent
Fantastic second day at #BiochemEvent Transcription and Chromatin UK 2024 organised by @BiochemSoc in Newcastle. @LJRussell_Lab is present and having an absolute blast, listening to great science in the field from all over the UK. Thank you to the organisers for this opportunity!
Congratulations are in order for @faithpurdyx and @M840943797 who have successfully concluded their MRes projects in @LJRussell_Lab and presented their posters last Friday. We are very proud, it was a pleasure having you in the lab! All the best for what the future will bring!
If our genetic code is the same in every cell, how do we have so many different cell types? Histone modifications tag our genetic code to open or close it for reading. Phoebe studies these proteins in a rare leukaemia, seeking open regions that might make good treatment targets.
It was a pleasure to catch up with one of my PhD sponsors, Irina and Liz from Combat Cancer, at the recent Newcastle University Support Thank You Event and update them on my project. 🌟👩🏼🔬

Delivery of gene-editing proteins is often not 100% efficient, so how do you select your cells of interest? By treating your cells with antibiotics, only those with the gene-editing proteins will survive and keep growing. This is beautifully shown by Cami's graph.
This years children's cancer run is underway @ChildCancerNTH . We are ready in the "Meet the scientist tent" to inspire the next generation of cancer researchers and to thank those who fundraise to make our research possible.
Ahmed is using a machine that detects proteins in single cells. We delivered gene-editing proteins into leukemia cells and Ahmed is checking how many have taken it inside. We hope to use this approach to edit genes that we think are important for driving leukaemia development.
Our CUT&Tag Queen @phoebe__snow has not only set up this technique in the @LJRussell_Lab, but she also analyses the sequencing data! Good in the lab and good with bioinformatics, well done Phoebe!
