Concerning the genetic ancestry of Egyptian Copts and Muslims

Although the name "copt" is currently used to describe modern-day Christians in Egypt, it was originally used as an exonym to refer to Egypt's entire people

Multiple studies, including genotyping on an Illumina Human SNP-array, ADMIXTURE-based clustering, and formal admix tools (f3-test, D-statistic) with f4-ratios on dat2a, have confirmed the question of relatedness between Muslims and Christian Egyptians. These studies also included allelic and haplotype-based frequencies of short tandem repeats.

According to Hollfelder et al. 2017:

" The ADMIXTURE analyses and the PCA displayed the genetic affinity of the Copts to the Egyptian population .. We further investigate the relationships of the Copts and the Egyptians to other groups. All population histories tested in every possible combination of either Copts or Egyptians, and Bedouin and Nuer, with Ju|’hoansi as outgroup to the others were rejected (D-statistic, |Z|>5.5), which points to a non-tree-like history of the Copts and Egyptians .. The Egyptians and Copts showed low levels of genetic differentiation (FST = 0.00236, Fig 1B), lower levels of genetic diversity (S17 Fig) and greater levels of RoH (Fig 4) compared to other northeast African groups, including Arab and Middle Eastern groups that share ancestry with the Copts and Egyptians (Fig 2) [41]. A formal test (D(Ju|’hoansi,X;Egypt,Copt)), did not find significant admixture into the Egyptians from other tested groups (X) as the explanation of the (admittedly low level of) differentiation between the two groups, *and the Copts and Egyptians displayed similar levels of European or Middle Eastern ancestry* (S8A and S8B Fig). Taken together, these results point to that the Copts and the Egyptians have a common history linked to smaller population sizes "

In Rickard Hammarén et al. 2023. The team identified out out similarities between the two groups:

"though not investigated here. The Copts look genctically similar to the Egyptians from Cairo, see Fig 1A and 1C, this is not unsurprising given that the Copts arrived in Sudan around 200 years ago from Egypt and seem to have lived relatively isolated since then"

Again, in Mohammed et al. 2009, a study concerned with Kuwaitis' genetic heritage, they evaluated the relationship between Muslims and Copts in "Adaima", where they both had similar ancestry profiles:

" The same program was used to test for the presence of broader genetic structure when Bedouin populations were compared to a worldwide population data set (Supplementary Table 2). In the worldwide comparison, a model containing three clusters was favored (at K=3 In P(D) = -42339; Table 1). In this analysis, almost all individuals demonstrated membership of multiple clusters, but some populations displayed membership of predominant clusters that corresponded to geographical affliation. For example, Adima Muslim Egyptians (63%) and Coptic Egyptians (65%) showed a distinct North African cluster "

Recently, an Egyptian team investigating the allele frequencies of Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) comparing random wide samples of Egyptian Copts and Muslims found similar outcomes. - (T. Taha et al. 2020) :

" Both groups have the same discriminative loci for all the forensic efficiency parameters such as FGA is the most discrimi- nating locus for both ethnic groups. Furthermore, The AFTs of the Egyptian population showed the great matching between the two groups. Therefore, from these results, we conclude that Egyptian Muslims and Egyptian Christians genetically originate from the same ancestors."

Finally, my own work, which attempts to analyze a larger data set of Egyptian samples, particularly in hitherto unexplored locations, revealed broadly comparable results, with even more fascinating conclusions about the overlap between the two groups. Soon enough to be included in an academic research, too.
