It never really was about South Africa.

See, South Africa plays a symbolic role in the global “white replacement” conspiracy theory. Though entirely baseless, it fuels fear-mongering about the supposed displacement of white populations across the globe. And South Africa, with its Black majority and debunked but persistent tales of white genocide, is paraded as proof even if the facts to do not match up. It’s a dog whistle. The “Swart Gevaar” rebranded for the global stage.

For many on the far right, July 2021 was a watershed moment. The unrest, stripped of context and nuance, was treated as confirmation of their worst fears. And then there’s Dylan Roof, the radicalized example of someone who believed the conspiracy of white replacement whose murderous manifesto included this repeatedly. That’s the playbook. Falsehood, fear, and racial panic.

This is why Trump clings to the story, even when the facts contradict him. At some point, we have to confront the possibility that this isn’t ignorance. It’s intention. The narrative serves him, his base, white supremacists, the far right, and also, extremists.

We may never change his message. But we can challenge its reach. Consistently. Loudly.

More on this tomorrow. I think I wrote about it two years ago, if memory serves me well.

South Africa continues to advance its agenda of cooperation and multilateralism through its membership of the United Nations, African Union, the Non-Aligned Movement and BRICS group of countries.

As humanity confronts unprecedented challenges, we are determined that a reformed and representative United Nations must be at the centre of global affairs.

We will continue to push for progress on the reform of the UN Security Council into a more inclusive, more effective body that is able to ensure peace and security. 

The work we do and what we stand for needs to be explained to many key players, especially to our trading partners and the many countries and leaders we interact with on the global stage.

With a view to explaining the many positions that we have taken and in particular the objectives we wish to achieve during our Presidency of the G20, I have decided to send a delegation of government and other leaders to various capitals on our continent and across the world.

This delegation will interact with various key players on a variety of matters that affect South Africa’s interests.
