Before we took ‘giant’ from French, Old English had a whole native vocabulary about giants. A giant was called an ‘ent’. The giant race was entcynn or ‘entkind’, entisċ meant ‘relating to giants’, and Roman ruins were called ‘ald enta ġewerc’, or ‘ancient work of giants’.
