Merit vs status inheritance – a civilizational dimension

It is not a question of equality, but a question of circulation.

Can talent rise?

Or does status mostly remain where it already is?

Every civilization develops elites.

The question is how those elites are renewed.

Do exceptional individuals constantly enter positions of influence, wealth, and responsibility?

Or do institutions gradually become mechanisms for preserving existing networks, families, credentials, and connections?

A useful test is simple:

When someone succeeds, what matters more?

What they can do?

Or who they know?

Where they are going?

Or where they came from?

Meritocratic societies are never perfectly meritocratic.

But they share a powerful assumption:

Talent may appear anywhere.

In a village.

In a poor family.

In an immigrant household.

In a garage.

In a classroom.

The task of the civilization is to find it, reward it, and put it to work.

Status-based societies operate differently.

Their hidden assumption is:

The people who already have status are probably the ones who should keep it.

Over time, institutions become less focused on discovering excellence and more focused on certifying membership.

Doors remain open in theory.

But increasingly closed in practice.

The result is subtle.

The society still talks about opportunity.

Yet fewer people believe effort will change their position.

Ambition declines.

Trust declines.

Talent begins looking elsewhere.

One civilization asks:

“Who is the best person for the job?”

The other increasingly asks:

“Who belongs in the room?”

Of course, no society can function without continuity.

Experience matters.

Tradition matters.

Stable institutions matter.

But when inheritance becomes stronger than achievement, stagnation follows.

Because every generation contains individuals capable of extraordinary things.

The question is whether the civilization can recognize them.

At its deepest level, this dimension is about whether a society treats status as a reward for contribution, or as property to be passed down.

One system continually renews itself.

The other gradually ossifies.

And history tends to favor civilizations that keep opening the door to talent, wherever it appears.
