There's a thing we've quietly stopped being willing to say out loud, which is that when you build a culture where an accusation of racism carries more instant weight than the body bleeding on the pavement, you have not advanced justice at all, you've just handed everyone a weapon and a script, and people feel that dishonesty even when they're too nervous to name it.

You could see it in the killing of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old student stabbed to death in Southampton, whose murderer tried to walk free by claiming he was the real victim of a racist attack, a lie so reflexively believed that police briefly treated the dying boy's side as the aggressor before the truth came out in court last week.

That is what happens when a society decides guilt and innocence flow from which identity box you tick rather than what you actually did, because the moment the category matters more than the conduct, the category becomes the alibi, and the truth becomes negotiable.

And the danger was never about any single group, it's that contempt and suspicion assigned by identity never stays in its lane, it spreads, it rots the trust a shared country runs on, until nobody is being seen as a person at all.

The way out was never complicated, because you either treat people as individuals, or you watch the whole thing come apart.

Wel de waarheid over abortus

Er is een punt waarop een samenleving niet langer kan doen alsof dit “gewoon een beleidsdossier” is. Niet omdat je dan moralistisch bent, maar omdat je ogen nog werken.

Bijna 300.000 abortussen in één jaar in het VK, dat is geen voetnoot, dat is een sirene. In Engeland en Wales alleen al ging het in 2023 om 277.970 abortussen (record). Tel je het hele VK bij elkaar op, dan wordt in de berichtgeving gesproken over 299.614 abortussen.

En dan die ene zin uit het artikel: “1 op de 3.” Of je het precies zo formuleert of iets strakker (“bijna een derde”), het is in elk geval niet uit de lucht gegrepen: het Britse statistiekbureau ONS rapporteerde dat in Engeland en Wales in 2022 29,7% van de concepties eindigde in abortus, een record.

Laat dat even binnenkomen. Niet als slogan. Niet als links/rechts. Gelovig/ongelovig. Maar als realiteit: bijna een derde van wat begint als menselijk leven, eindigt doelbewust vóór het een kans krijgt.

Mijn verwalgde conclusie (pro-leven)
Wat mij hier zo misselijk maakt, is niet alleen de daad. Het is het mechanisme eromheen. De routine. De normalisering. De toon van “zorg” terwijl de uitkomst structureel dood is.

Want dit is niet “incidenten”. Dit is industrie-achtige schaal. En op die schaal kun je niet meer geloofwaardig zeggen: het is altijd een last resort, het is zeldzaam, het is uitzonderlijk. Nee. Het is ingebakken geraakt in de manier waarop we met verantwoordelijkheid, seksualiteit, armoede, relaties en toekomst omgaan.

En precies daar zit de morele rot: we hebben een systeem gebouwd waarin het ongeboren kind de meest wegwerpbare partij is en waarin de vrouw vervolgens vaak óók alleen achterblijft met de gevolgen, de twijfel, het verdriet, de druk, of het gevoel dat er überhaupt geen alternatief was.

“Maar waarom dan?” Omdat de samenleving faalt
De pro-choice duiding in de Britse pers wijst vooral op kosten van levensonderhoud, gebrekkige toegang tot anticonceptie en druk op zorg. Prima. Laten we dat dan ook hardop zeggen:
Als je economie, je zorg en je sociale vangnet zo zijn ingericht dat zwangerschap voor grote groepen voelt als een ramp die je moet “oplossen”, dan is dat geen vrijheid. Dat is dwang in nette kleren.

Daarom vind ik dit “abortusprobleem” uiteindelijk een beschavingsprobleem:
🔹Een samenleving die kinderen financieel bestraft.
🔹Een politiek die “gezinswaarden” lippendienst bewijst maar ouders laat stikken.
🔹Een cultuur die verantwoordelijkheid verheerlijkt zolang het niet betekent dat je voor kwetsbaar leven moet opstaan.

En dan nog dit: de medische postorder-normaliteit
In Engeland en Wales wordt inmiddels het merendeel van de abortussen gedaan via medicatie, vaak met gebruik thuis (telemedicine/“pills by post” is breed ingeburgerd). Daar kun je over discussiëren, maar één ding staat vast: hoe makkelijker het wordt, hoe sneller de morele rem slijt. Wat eerst zwaar was, wordt procedureel. En wat procedureel is, wordt uiteindelijk “normaal”.

Pro-leven betekent ook: ophouden met mensen wegzetten
Ik ga één grens trekken, juist omdat ik pro-leven ben: verachting voor vrouwen is moreel lui en strategisch dom. Veel vrouwen kiezen niet omdat ze “blij” zijn, maar omdat ze zich klem voelen: financieel, relationeel, sociaal, mentaal.

Als je echt pro-leven bent, dan zeg je dus óók:
🔹Geen vrouw mag het gevoel hebben dat abortus haar enige uitweg is.
🔹De vader hoort niet te verdwijnen uit het verhaal.

Adoptie, pleegzorg, hulp rond zwangerschap, inkomenszekerheid, huisvesting en kinderopvang zijn geen “extraatjes”, maar de minimale infrastructuur van een menswaardige samenleving.

De kern
Waar ik van walg, is dat we met droge ogen kunnen leven in een land waar dit soort aantallen een “nieuwsitem” zijn en geen nationale schaamte.

Want uiteindelijk is het simpel: Hoe je het ook framet, je kunt geen samenleving gezond noemen die structureel een derde van haar eigen toekomst wegorganiseert.
Nederland aborteert 1 op de 4. Walgelijk pijnlijk ook.
