The laser eye maxis are in shambles now that their idol @saylor has embraced Ordinals.
Chief Wizard @udiWertheimer will be debating them on the main stage at Bitcoin Miami next week.
Let's show our support!
The 7980x Bull Case for Ordinals and BRC-20
Web3 has arrived on the mother chain. Since the release of Ordinals four months ago there has been an explosion of Web3 activity on the Bitcoin base layer. Now that we have non-fungible (ordinal inscriptions) and fungible (BRC-20) primitives on Bitcoin all of the Web3 use cases from other chains are being unlocked. A Bitcoin Web3 ecosystem and culture have organically formed around these primitives and a new movement on Bitcoin was born.
Three months ago we were trading with spreadsheets in discord OTC channels and now there are 10+ DEXs, and 9 of the top 10 crypto exchanges in the world have tweeted about either Ordinals or BRC-20.
Three months ago the biggest "brands" in the space were degenerate NFT influencers like myself and now many iconic brands such as Bugatti, Bitcoin Magazine, and Yuga Labs have released Ordinal collections.
Three months ago there were only 1,000 of us and now over 150,000 people have made an Ordinal or BRC-20 transaction on Bitcoin L1.
The influx of users, developers, brands, and institutional capital has created a series of positive feedback loops that have led to a rapid expansion of the ecosystem.
Over the past four months, we have seen three mini "cycles" of this feedback loop play out. It looks like this:
1. Users identify that there is an opportunity and enter the space and begin speculating.
2. Developers see that the users are facing lots of problems with the current tooling and they see an opportunity to solve those problems so they enter the space and begin improving the infrastructure and UX.
3. Brands are a magnet to wherever the attention economy directs them so they see all of the excitement from users and developers so they enter the space and start lending their reputation to the space.
4. Institutional capital (VCs) see an opportunity to fuel the developers and brands with capital in order to have exposure to this ecosystem in their portfolio.
Every cycle follows a pattern of speculation leading to ATHs followed by a correction where the users, brands, and institutional capital wait to see if the developers can improve the infrastructure and UX enough to unlock a new set of use cases and onboard the next wave of users which will kickstart the next cycle.
You will often see memes in the Ordinal space such as "Ethereum was testnet" or "All roads lead back to Bitcoin" and they all try to convey the same idea that it is inevitable that the first, longest running, largest, most secure, most immutable, most decentralized, and most iconic blockchain will eventually have all of the use cases and dapps that other chains have. Since Bitcoin had the most to lose it made sense for it to sit back and let other chains experiment with Web3 for the past 7 years, but now that DeFi, NFTs, and fungible tokens have demonstrated that they provide real value and solve real problems it is finally time for Bitcoin to step into the ring.
If the sleeping dragon has indeed awoken and Web3 is coming to Bitcoin, this represents a once in a decade opportunity to participate in the creation of a very large amount of wealth.
A mature Web3 ecosystem like Ethereum or Solana tends to have a roughly 1:1 ratio between the market cap of the native currency and the total value of all other assets. If this same trend were to play out on Bitcoin and all other assets on Bitcoin were to reach 1:1 parity with BTC, the market size for Bitcoin Web3 would be enormous.
BTC Market Cap: $522B
Ordinal Inscriptions Market Cap: $200M
BRC-20 Market Cap: $454M
This means that the value of Web3 assets on Bitcoin is currently $654M which is 0.12% of the market cap of BTC. If the positive feedback loop cycles described earlier play out several more times over the coming years and Bitcoin becomes a mature Web3 ecosystem then this would imply 798x growth in the total value of Web3 assets on Bitcoin.
When you compound this with the thesis that cypto as a whole will have another bull run in the coming years you can somewhat conservatively multiply the opportunity by 10x. BTC reached a market cap of 1.27T in the last bull run. If it were to reach a 5.22T market cap in the next bull run that would represent 10x growth from where we are at today.
What you end up with is a 7980x opportunity between now and whenever the next crypto cycle bull run happens.
To be clear this is just the bull case. There are definitely bear cases where climate activists successfully lobby to get Bitcoin banned or where the SEC effectively bans all Web3 activity in the United States or perhaps Ordinals and BRC-20 are just the beta protocols for Web3 on Bitcoin and something else much better comes along and replaces them.
It's impossible to know exactly how this will play out but historically betting against Bitcoin has been a very bad idea and any serious capital allocator in the fintech sector should be at a minimum allocating 1% of their portfolio to this space in the event that the 7980x bull case does play out.
Over the past four months I have personally spent over half a million dollars of my own funds collecting ordinal inscriptions, accumulating BRC-20 tokens, and building a company in this space (@ord_io) so this isn't just some thread for engagement, I believe in this thesis and am putting my money where my mouth is. I may end up being wrong, but from all of the signals I am receiving this is very much what it felt like when I bought Bitcoin at $300 and CryptoPunks at $7,000.
None of this is financial advice and you should only invest what you can afford to lose. This is a highly volatile sector and even some of the most sophisticated players get wiped out.
I hope that this helps give transparency into how I'm thinking about Web3 on Bitcoin from a financial perspective.
Nice read! There are already btc maxi but today is as early as it gets to get involved and be a @BRCMaxi! Half a million dollar wow! One question for @LeonidasNFT are you a brc $MAXI confirmed?

4/ Market Cap, Community and Holders:
Shout out to @ord_io and @LeonidasNFT for building a fast paced tracker on brc-20 tokens! With a supply of only 2,100,000 and holders slowly growing from 1200 to almost 1400 as of this tweet! I'm sure you know market cap currently at 450k!
