Notes from our wilder garden, for native plants and creatures - (and with a few Scots Pines). Now mainly on Instagram @pinescorner. Posts by Steve & Jane.
Hello #gardenshour! Anyone else #rewilding a garden with native plants and habitats? Ours has the feel of a natural woodland glade with 50 shades of green and a sprinkle of colour: pics include buttercups, ragged robin, red campion, logpile ferns, & dog rose. ~J #wildlifegarden
Birding folk - have swifts all left our shores now ? Or are some still on the lookout for next year’s nest site? A swift flew over last week (6m from south coast) but prob more focused on getting to Africa than the lure of our call player and next summer? ~ J 5th Aug

Common Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) gives height and variety in the #gardenmeadow and provides food for caterpillars of the Forester moth and Small Copper butterfly - so saving seeds to scatter where there’s gaps for more #FlowersOnFriday next year🤞. #Wildlifegarden ~ J
This week’s #wildflowerhour challenge was to find #stinkyplants - so our native Stinking Iris (Iris Foetidissima or gladdon) seems an ideal candidate. Does well in our wilder #wildlifegarden, though last year’s berries haven’t been taken yet 🤔 ~ J
First sighting of a thick-legged flower beetle (aka swollen-thighed beetle ) in our #wildlifegarden , doing the rounds of our meadow flowers and seeing off a bee with a prior claim on the buttercup! #gardenshour ~ J
Spot the invertebrate?! I went looking for a #wildwebswednesday pic but was struck more by the flower forms of these native trees in our #wildlifegarden. I guess the inverts (except 1) were lurking in the leaves! Here’s Rowan, Wayfarer tree, Guelder rose and Hawthorn. ~ J
