Building management opened the hatch.

It led to a narrow service corridor connecting several apartments.

Inside they found a blanket.

Empty food containers.

A flashlight.

The man had been living inside the walls for weeks.

He'd come into her apartment only when she was at work.

Then an officer picked up a notebook.

Every page had dates and times.

The notebook wasn't filled with her schedule.

It was filled with the landlord's.

The stranger hadn't been watching the tenant at all.

He had been hiding from someone else in the building.

The police arrested him later that evening.

When they asked why he chose her apartment, he gave one answer that stayed with her forever.

Man: “Yours was the only home where nobody ever argued... so I knew no one would notice an extra person.”
