10,000 voices. One message. 💚
New Zealanders are standing up for nature. Together, we’ve reached a milestone – 10,000 signatures calling for the Denniston Plateau to be protected as a scientific reserve.
From giant wētā to dwarf mānuka to kiwi calling through the fog, Denniston is a living museum of life that exists nowhere else on Earth.
Every name on that petition says the same thing: Denniston is worth more for what we can learn from it than what we can take from it.
We’ve stopped mining on Denniston before – and we’ll do it again. Denniston is too precious to lose.

We are saddened by the passing of Dr Jane Goodall, a global icon of conservation whose life’s work transformed our understanding of the natural world and inspired millions to protect it.
Dr Goodall was a great friend to conservation in Aotearoa New Zealand, bringing her international 'Reasons for Hope' tour to Wellington last June, aged 90.
“I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr Jane Goodall's passing, and deeply grateful to have been inspired by her as a child, and lucky to have met with her on two separate occasions,” says Forest & Bird’s chief executive Nicola Toki.
"She and I both shared a love for hope and action as a way to motivate people, and she absolutely loved the story of the Chatham Island black robin and its conservation recovery from just one viable female, Old Blue.
"She also reminded me that hope isn't some overly optimistic wishing for things to happen, but rather ‘dogged determination to do what is in our power to make the better future we wish for actually happen’. She certainly did that. Moe mai rā e te Rangatira.”
Dr Goodall shared her lifelong conservation story during her visit to Parliament in 2024, which was hosted by Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro and supported by Forest & Bird and other partners. In her on-stage conversation with Nicola, she highlighted the power of young people to drive change, especially through creative communication and community action.
Jane visited New Zealand on a number of occasions, and in 2017, the Jane Goodall Institute NZ was launched at Te Papa. Jane’s passion for educating children was central to her mission. Through the Roots & Shoots programme, she has inspired thousands of rangatahi across New Zealand and the world to take action for animals, people, and the environment.
In 2019, Dr Goodall joined Forest & Bird and other leading environmental organisations to launch the Aotearoa Deal for Nature, a bold action plan to reverse our environmental crisis. She called on all New Zealanders to act urgently and take action to protect nature.
She also brought joy to other lighter conservation moments, such as endorsing the hoiho yellow-eyed penguin in Forest & Bird’s Bird of the Year competition, helping secure its second title.
Dr Goodall famously said: "The greatest danger to our future is apathy. You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you." Forest & Bird hopes to continue honour that legacy.
Our thoughts are with her whānau, friends, and the global community of conservationists who carry her light forward.

Mōrena to everyone except Christopher Luxon who this morning decided to side with fossil fuel companies instead of lowering your power bills.
Weak and out of touch.
