@avzaagzonunaada @sanawbar13 @lameensouag @YeOldeAmel @theyloveoudi I agree very doubtful it is Coptic, like so many proposed Coptic loans in Egyptian/Sai’di Arabic. The proposed etymology for the word is ⲛⲏⲛⲓ which is only attested in Bohairic and means honeycomb which, again, doesn’t quite fit.

@tonogenesis What do you think about the idea of interpreting the double vowels simply as representing a vowel hiatus with a general a non-phonemic glottal stop (or glide) onset? So ⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ /me.e.ʃə/ but [me.ʔe.ʃə] just as ⲥⲁ(ⲉⲓ)ⲉ is perhaps /sa.ɛ/ and [sa.jɛ]?
