Kidnappings, home invasions, torture: physical attacks on bitcoiners are rising fast.
I built an open, verified record of them: 669 cases in 72 countries since 2020, each one checked against its sources.
Here's what it shows 🧵
Sept 2022, Spalding, UK. Three men from London try a night-time robbery on a 19-year-old crypto holder. One of them wears a fake police uniform.
A neighbour finds that cop a bit odd and calls the real police ! They got caught fleeing by car, before even reaching the victim.
New update of the dataset: 34 cases added. Only 1 of them is from the last few weeks, the other 33 are older cases that new searches dug out, back to 2020. First case ever recorded in Croatia.
And @lopp imported 347 of my cases into his list. Much respect.
Taiwan has its own pattern. 63 cases recorded since 2020, and 35 of them are robberies during an in-person trade: someone shows up with cash to buy crypto, mostly USDT, or with crypto to sell, and gets robbed on the spot.
Per adult, the rate is about as high as in France.
@BITC_minimalist@lopp Artificial intelligence is already assisting hackers in accessing sensitive data, effectively helping them identify new victims. The sharp increase in the number of attacks since 2025 is not a coincidence.
@realNickPawlak@lopp Very much like using AI to find many security holes in software doesn't make it more vulnerable: it already was and we just didn't know it. In the end, software is more secure with AI. Let's apply the same logic with exposing wrench attacks.
Good news: the Bitcoin Wrench Attack archive just got a lot more accurate.
Bad news: we just doubled the total number of known attacks to over 700.
Kudos to @pizza_bitcoiner for finding hundreds of new attack reports via agentic searches.

@lopp You are the one I should be thanking for starting it in the first place 🙏
I'm very happy to help!
My pipeline will be running every week, adding new cases and also updating old ones with new evidence. The data will continue to remain available for download.
@Crypto_Mags Hurts to admit it though. I think self-custody practices have a lot room for improvement. Let's not jump to conclusions too fast and declare them a no-go.
@lopp Everything is open: browse the cases, download JSON/CSV, read the methodology and its limits.
Know of a case that's missing? Tell me.
And stay safe: don't flex your stack, share as little data as you can.

@lopp The record is updated every week by AI agents.
They sweep news in 57 national editions, court databases and Lopp's repo, pre-screen headlines with a local model, then read and verify every candidate. Every change is logged:
