@asdf_101@oldbooksguy Thank you for writing out what I was too lazy to express. OP, despite styling himself as ‘old books guy’, has evidently not read a history book.
@wclemente Can you expand upon why this is useful? The risk to the investor of mtry debasement is inflation, no? + M1 expansion post 2008 did not lead to inflation. Why hedge purely against debasement?
@sazzam31@josephmdurso Isn’t there a broader question about whether clubs should be earning money by encouraging fans to engage in pure financial speculation? What’s more, products that deliberately target naive retail investors? It’s unethical.
Why is the ECB Governing Council currently in an emergency meeting? What are PEPP reinvestments? Why are they the main tool of the ECB to fight a new Eurozone crisis now on the horizon? And what more powerful tool is needed? A 🧵
@usefulDesign@ak_pennington GFC/Eurozone crisis was not an inflationary shock, however. Since AUS imports most consumer goods an AUD deval would increase CPI. If I am right then RBA rate rise is the right choice, as higher inflation hurts low wage workers the most.
@usefulDesign@ak_pennington My point is that precisely bc we have a floating (not pegged) xchange rate, if RBA rate goes too low relative to other CBs, then capital outflows will depreciate the AUD, making imports more expensive —> higher inflation.
@ak_pennington Hi Alison, I firmly agree though this overlooks one thing. If RBA doesn’t hike along with Fed, ECB, BoE, etc, this could risk currency depreciation therefore further inflation. Am I wrong about this? Thanks
@adam_tooze@HirokoTabuchi Is there some hindsight bias here? Today, it looks as if it was always obvious that Russia-Europe gas ties would lead to trouble. But in the moment, there were convincing arguments in favour of pipelines, and plausible reasons to believe war would not be the outcome.
1/6 There is still a lot of talk about Russia shifting to the yuan so the sanction will only advance international use and status of the yuan vis-a-vis USD. This is seriously misplaced..
@Mij_Europe Hi Mij, question: death of NSII does not change fundamentals of Germany/Russia energy relationship. E.g. NS1 will likely operate at full capacity again this year. Can/should/will Germany/EU curb existing imports since energy relationship not consistent with the aims of sanctions?
