Chinatowns everywhere are facing an existential threat. Whether from gentrification, racism, crime, lack of economic development or funding. Honored to address leaders from across North America at this year’s Chinatown Solidarity Summit. Thank you @WtChinatown for having me.
Of course Florida is defunding DEI & sociology. Sociology is the field that gathers data that shows that racism exists. And guess what Martin Luther King’s major was? Sociology. Sociology is a threat. It can speak truth to power.

I cite "How Democracies Die" all the time and teach it to my students. Now I'm reading this. So far, just as critical for understanding what's happening in the United States right now.

While tempted to focus rage on Clarence Thomas for colluding to destroy affirmative action after making his whole career from it, remember white women benefit most from affirmative action than any other group, and Amy Coney Barrett climbed that ladder then snatched it back too.
In banning affirmative action, the Supreme Court has *not* banned using race in college admissions. "Race neutral" is a legal fantasy, the latest to conserve racism. As Uma Jayakumar and I write @TheAtlantic, “race neutral” is the new “separate but equal.”

It is very important to do better than referring to the Asian American community as a monolith in statements like this, because plenty of Asian students from less privileged backgrounds will also be hurt by this decision.
The dismantling of affirmative action is a devastating blow for educational equity. AAPI Equity Alliance condemns this regressive decision, invalidating a long-standing effort to promote equal opportunities for students of color. Read our full statement: https://t.co/0SvOjHoTEu
Affirmative action was never a complete answer in the drive towards a more just society. But for generations of students who had been systematically excluded from most of America’s key institutions—it gave us the chance to show we more than deserved a seat at the table.
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision, it’s time to redouble our efforts.
The SCOTUS ruling to strike down race-based admissions at Harvard and U.N.C. is NOT a win for #AsianAmericans
Asian Americans have been used as a pawn and a wedge in a fight against #affirmativeaction
White students will benefit most from this decision.

Today's decisions from the Supreme Court on Affirmative Action represent a significant setback for Civil Rights in the U.S. and are a cornerstone of the conservative movement's coordinated effort to roll back access to opportunity for systemically marginalized Americans.
Instead of showing me your diversity statement, show me your hiring data, your discrimination claim stats, your salary tables, your retention numbers, your diversity policies, and your leaders’ public actions against racism.
End performative allyship.
Someone asked me why is Black history, specifically, being targeted. I said it's because our history has always been political *by definition*: Our very presence on these lands is the greatest rebuke to the narrative of American exceptionalism. We give lie to the lie.
