Argument 1) I asked for methodology to delinniate. I never said you have accept sources whole sail.

Argument 2) I never treated historical proximity as a “flimsy” secondary criterion. It is however not the only criterion by which we judge historical sources. As an evangelical JC does not hold to any of the others so I asked what was the justification for appealing to him outside of historical proximity.

JC is evangelical so I’m assuming he’s using this quote as some sort of support for Sola Scriptura. I would argue that they’re mutually exclusive doctrines. (With you being Anglican I’m sure you would disagree with this.)

Also, even if granted St Irenaeus is somehow teaching Sola Scriptura while simultaneously affirming Apostolic Succession, this would call into question JC’s methodology for when he appeals to him vs when he doesn’t. When and how does he decide when St Irenaeus is teaching the truth? This is similar to when I point out to people who appeal to St Jerome for the canon yet crickets when St Jerome defends/teaches veneration of relics.

Lastly, on what basis (in JC’s evangelical worldview) should we care what St Irenaeus teaches? I could grant historical proximity to the apostles but outside of that what’s the reasoning? If you don’t hold to apostolic succession, the office of the bishop, etc then why care what he says?

All questions that pop up for me when I see JC using this quote
