Academia loves meetings, but they're often inefficient
Make sure you are well prepared and know what to do afterwards!

The first time I did a literature review, it took me months.
Now i can do it in a week.
How?
I spent 500+ hours refining a system for my notes. Here's is the end result:

Great article by @MayaGosztyla, couldn't agree more!
"Time management shouldn’t be about maximizing the amount of work you can cram into your day; instead, it should help you to prioritize your professional goals without sacrificing personal well-being."

Being productive is merely a tool, not a goal on itself
Keep your real goal in mind and don't forget to enjoy the road towards it!
#phdlife#AcademicTwitter#phdvoice
Don't track your productivity in hours ⏲
Some days you'll achieve more in 1 hour than on other days in 8 hours
We all have better and worse days, don't feel bad for being a bit less productive some days!

I stopped taking handwritten notes during meetings
Most of my meetings are now online, which means I have acces to my laptop
By quickly jotting down the most important aspects in @obsdmd I have a nice summary to work out later
I can easily search and link them now

#AcademicTwitter Do U know that U cannot write just by thinking about UR project or staring at UR monitor, even though U set that goal in UR mind & put all the sticky notes everywhere to remind U of UR goals?
I wish it were possible!

An idea from Atomic Habits:
"When you fall in love with the process rather than the product, you don’t have to wait to give yourself permission to be happy. You can be satisfied anytime your system is running."
– @JamesClear
A PhD will take as much as you’re willing to give it, which is why it’s so important to set your own boundaries and stick to them.

@MemoryRep You could for example think about going abroad for some time, doing something in a field you've never worked in before
Or try out different things, for example spend some time on teaching to find out whether that's something you like 😊
Choose deliberately
Bigger gains often come with somewhat larger risks
Don't live your life by the default choices, choose actively
Your PhD is a perfect time to go a little outside your comfort zone and see where that brings you

The key to working efficiently is knowing how you like to work!
I prefer to alternate things I like with something I like less
First reading, then lab work
But for others, it might be good to stay in the same flow for a longer time
Do you know what works for you?

@Jodie_Boisvert If you want to combine it with literature management, I can recommend @zotero, since the last major version it has a built-in PDF viewer
Also check out @MushtaqBilalPhD, he has a lot of tips on Zotero

Zotero's inbuilt Note Editor can REVOLUTIONIZE your note-taking and writing processes.
But most academics don't know much about it.
Here's how to supercharge your writing using Zotero's Note Editor 👇
A step-by-step guide with visuals 🧵
@Jodie_Boisvert@PostPhDRoad For the latter, it's a little less trivial, but I find that practice really helps here
Also if I later go over a paper again and find highlights that are not useful, I just delete them
That's the benefit of using digital highlighting
So many people say highlighting your literature is a waste of time, but I disagree
It's where I start and then I extract the most important aspects, in my own words
Rephrasing in your own words is the key step here!
It'll help you find things back
#phdlife#AcademicTwitter
@Jodie_Boisvert@PostPhDRoad In the first case, it's easy, only highlight the stuff that's related to the question you want to answer
Also, there's then no need to read the entire paper, just focus on the parts that relate to your question
