What can a bike in Thinktank Birmingham tell us about histories of technology and empire? A new article by historian Nathan Cardon explores cycling as an act of resistance to British imperial occupation of eastern African @thinktankmuseum @artsatbham https://t.co/gNI4MnIvNr
@w_carruthers This is fascinating, and once you've seen it makes perfect sense ... agreed @LukeGartlan - so much more to explore here. Very much hoping that there is a catalogue and the World's Fairs angle is also v interesting to hear about. Thank you for sharing @andrealstanton
@emilymfg@NGVMelbourne I teach some c19 Australian art on my Art& Empire module (and your work Emily too!) - I especially look at contemporary BIPOC responses to c19 work so this catalogue will be really key for that as well...
@emilymfg@NGVMelbourne I had this on interlibrary loan during Covid lockdowns 1-3 (oops!) but was never able to actually order it ... doing so right now for the library & going to integrate into my teaching - thank you for reminding me!
@poisonchallis YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!! I'm not jealous. I'm not jealous. Oh my god I'm so jealous I could cry. Please do all the things and put up all the pictures so I can be there vicariously!
It is "Gallery Week" here @TheGolovine & I have been having an interesting time exploring public art & museum collections with our students. Yesterday I went on a sculpture & memorial walk looking at legacies of industry & empire with MA "Made in Birmingham: Art & Urban space"
BRUMMIES: Can anyone confirm that Luke Perry's Forward Together sculpture is still in Colmore Sq?? I'm taking students on a sculpture walk tomorrow and completely failed to double check ... normally I'm not worried that public art will just vanish but this has a history of it..
Voted YES today in @ucu reballots. Fair pay, pensions & an end to casualisation is the very least we deserve. Industrial action is working. Get voting folks, let's get this done! @birminghamucu#ucuRISING (also loving all the yarnbombed postboxes)
Many congratulations @ArtBhartiParmar ! This is richly deserved and wonderful news. Am so looking forward to exploring aspects of this work with you in Febraury @CraftsCouncilUK with @race_empire_prb - still time to see Cotton: Labour Land & Body which closes march 4
