For those who want a bit more context: a massive student and worker protest is unfolding in Indonesia’s capital in response to the Prabowo government’s decision to raise fuel prices, alongside other policies that many Indonesians are calling corrupt because they deepen the burden on working-class Indonesians already struggling with rising living costs and a weakening rupiah.
What’s fueling the anger even further is the broader feeling that economic pressure is being pushed downward onto ordinary people while major policy decisions continue to favour politicians and the ultra wealthy.
Just last year, Indonesians protested over the same kind of government corruption, which led to a crackdown on its own civilians using military force in cities like Jakarta and Bandung, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, including those of students.
This situation, however, embarrassed the Probowo government, as people from all over the world began paying attention and massed mobilised to send food, medical/legal aid and financial donations via apps like Grab and Ojek (the region’s equivalent of Uber) the movement received particularly strong support from people across Asia, especially Southeast and East Asia, while also drawing contributions from around the world. This is why Indonesians are asking the world pay attention to their country again.
Saying that the protest is unnecessary because the market and rupiah are making a rebound is like saying you can cancel your dentist appointment because the painkillers stopped your toothache. The symptom improved, not necessarily the problem.
The most heart wrenching about our political situation tuh pada akhirnya SELALU harus mahasiswa turun ke jalan dan SELALU memakan korban. Segala perubahan kebijakan sekecil apa pun selalu numbalin rakyat. SeBAJINGAN itu pemerintah kita.
Good morning. Woke up to $1 now equals 18.100 rupiah. Pertamax has risen from Rp12.300 to Rp16.250, and 5kg rice from Rp75.000 to Rp90.000. If you see nothing wrong with Indonesia's current fucked-up situation, you're either a nepo baby or braindead assholes who voted for 02.
"lagian si op maksa jadi engineer padahal gaji ortu cuma segitu, kalo jurusan lain juga ga bakal se sesek itu" GOD FORBID KIDS HAVE THEIR OWN DREAMS I GUESS??? negara gila bikin rakyatnya jadi ikutan gila
“In practice, however, technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise it, finance it, regulate it and use it.”
THANK YOU POPE LEO FOR SAYING THIS.
Time for the “technology is a tool with no inherent moral position” idea to die!
Jangan hype lagu MBG yang bahlul-bahlul itu. AI, shallow, dan imo terasa dibuat untuk desensitize masyarakat sama politikus berbahaya. Inget gemoyfication 02? Young voters + lower income class ate that shit up, we can't, CAN'T let that slipped out again.
