Marching Band Showcase was a spectacular display of the musical talent and skill throughout our region. All the bands were terrific, especially our Dow High and Midland High bands! Jefferson and Northeast middle schools opened the event, and they sounded great. @MidlandPS
Extraversion is not a prerequisite for leadership.
It doesn't matter how outgoing people are. What counts is how well they communicate and how committed they are to serving.
The people to promote are the ones with the skill—and the will—to elevate the group above themselves.
❤️ Building a culture of #inclusion is about more than just disability awareness. It's about fostering kindness, empathy, and a sense of shared responsibility. ALL students are our students. #LeadInclusion#EdLeaders#Teachers#UDL
Offering #domesticviolence and #sexualassault services is heavy but incredibly vital work. I want to thank Denise Barry, Executive Director of Shelterhouse of Midland & Gladwin Counties, for testifying to what agencies like hers have experienced on the ground in recent years.
Coach Izzo’s remarks to the Michigan State community were powerful. Tomorrow, we at the University of Michigan will welcome our friends from Michigan State to our campus in Ann Arbor with open arms. Coach Izzo, We will become closer. The world needs it. #SpartanStrong
We pay too much attention to the most confident voices—and too little attention to the most thoughtful ones.
Certainty is not a sign of credibility. Speaking assertively is not a substitute for thinking deeply.
It's better to learn from complex thinkers than smooth talkers.
It's not ambition that holds women back. They're punished for violating gender stereotypes as warm & submissive.
Data: ambitious men and women get promoted. Aggressive women are penalized more than men.
End the double standard: if you accept it in men, don't reject it in women.
In toxic cultures, people are rewarded solely for individual results. How they treat others is ignored.
In healthy cultures, people are valued for collective contributions. Pay, performance, and promotions depend on elevating others.
If you're an asshole, you're not a success.
Today’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 ranks the University of Michigan as the #23 university in the world and #14 in the USA among 1,799 ranked universities across 104 countries and regions. 〽️
"This is not my expertise" is not an admission of incompetence. It's an expression of self-awareness.
The antidote to arrogance is not lowering your confidence. It's raising your humility.
You don't have to deny your strengths. You just have to recognize your weaknesses.
The true leader in a group is rarely the person who talks the most. It's usually the person who listens best.
Listening is more than hearing what’s said. It’s noticing and surfacing what isn’t said.
Inviting dissenting views and amplifying quiet voices are acts of leadership.
Looking for the good in others doesn’t make you naive. It means you’re not cynical.
Recognizing people’s strengths doesn’t deny their flaws. It reveals their potential to overcome their flaws.
Those who refuse to see the good in others fail to bring out the best in others.
Downplaying your achievements is not the antidote to appearing arrogant.
Humility is acknowledging your weaknesses, not denying your strengths. Generosity is elevating others, not diminishing yourself.
Owning your success doesn't make you a narcissist—it makes you a role model.
If you are okay with having Muslim, Jewish and Hindu students sit through a Christian prayer in public school, and not okay with having Christian students sit through a Muslim, Jewish or Hindu prayer, then it’s NOT religious freedom- it’s religious oppression.
