🚨BREAKING: A Somali immigrant who raped a 10-year-old girl in Denmark is now charged with murdering a 77-year-old man.

In 2011, then-teenager Ahmed Omar Mohamed abducted a 10-year-old girl from a playground in Gullestrup near Herning. He dragged her into the woods, held a knife to her throat, and raped her repeatedly for more than an hour. He was also convicted of attempting to rape her friend and another young woman.

In 2012 he received a six-year prison sentence. Although the lower court ordered permanent deportation, the appeals court made the deportation conditional, citing international conventions and his time spent in Denmark as a minor. He was not removed.

Now the same man is charged with beating and strangling 77-year-old Henrik Johansen to death in Svendborg. The pensioner’s body was found hidden in a locked shed more than a month after he was killed.

A convicted child rapist who was not deported is now accused of killing an elderly Dane.

This is the predictable result of prioritizing international conventions over public safety.

Luke Collins makes a fascinating observation here that raises uncomfortable questions about Catholic education and catechesis. The extraordinary success of Richard Dawkins and the New Atheists was not necessarily that they had discovered devastating new arguments against Christianity, but that an entire generation of young Catholics had apparently never encountered the intellectual tradition capable of answering them. Aquinas, Augustine, Newman and countless others had wrestled with questions about God's existence, reason, suffering and the nature of belief with a philosophical sophistication that the New Atheists frequently failed to acknowledge.

Yet how many Catholic schoolchildren were introduced to that tradition? How many left Catholic schools knowing the vocabulary of religious education but unable to explain why belief in God is intellectually reasonable? There is a profound difference between teaching children about Catholicism and forming them to understand why it is true.

Perhaps the real scandal of the New Atheist phenomenon is not that Dawkins persuaded so many young Catholics to abandon their faith, but that we had so often failed to give them the intellectual foundations necessary to recognise the weaknesses in his arguments. A Church with two thousand years of intellectual riches should never be afraid of questions. It should be deeply concerned when its own children have never been taught the answers.
