On her approach, the doors are slammed in her face, symbolising the independence of @houseofcommons from the monarchy. She then knocks three times before the doors are re-opened. #StateOpening
The Supreme Court on Thursday strengthened protections for religious rights in the workplace, siding in part with a Sabbath-observant mail carrier who quit the U.S. Postal Service after he was forced to deliver packages on Sundays. https://t.co/nP6qcLZ59E
Affirmative action was never a complete answer in the drive towards a more just society. But for generations of students who had been systematically excluded from most of America’s key institutions—it gave us the chance to show we more than deserved a seat at the table.
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision, it’s time to redouble our efforts.
Affirmative action = racial discrimination on our college campuses.
I’m pleased to see SCOTUS put an end to this disgraceful practice. https://t.co/sPwyicbvcK

Y12 - Lords debates Illegal Migration Bill today. A fatal motion proposed. Over 90 speakers listed incl. Archbishop of Canterbury. A threat from govt to use Parliament Act. Great for role/power of Lords, legislative process, Commons v Lords, etc.

We will fight this expensive, immoral and totally unworkable legislation at every turn.

🚨BREAKING🚨
Lib Dem Peer @brianpaddick has tabled a fatal motion on the Government’s Illegal Migration Bill.
A fatal motion is parliamentary procedure which would kill off the passage of the legislation, and is the strongest opposition that can be taken in the House of Lords.
Y12 - watch this one minute clip. Great for legislative process and parliamentary scrutiny, role of opposition/backbenchers, power of govt, protection of rights (plus right to protest links to pressure groups), and lots of links to democracy topic.
Y12 - we touched on this today... a president up for re-election can be judged on their achievements. 2024 will be particularly odd as it'll be possible to do that for Biden and Trump! Great for presidential power essays.
Chief Justice John Roberts will not testify before Congress about Supreme Court ethics | CNN Politics - useful for possible checks on Supreme Court by Congress https://t.co/oPLjKBaluk
Y13 - really interesting story here for power/role of Supreme Court and Congress (incl. Congressional committees & ctte chairs), but especially for separation of powers (Constitution topic)
