Bill Shankly and Dennis Law Story for You

Following on from last night talking about Shanks ive decided to share some Shanks stories so will start with this one thanks to @Livin_Liverpool and @e_evol89 for the #shankly inspiration.

So back in 1978 my good friend Annie Ross took me to ATV where she was one of the 9 boxes in Celebrity Squares (those of you born after that should probably Google it) special Scotland send off, it was filmed a day before the European cup final against Brugge at Wembley.

Guests included Dennis Law, Dickie Davis and Bill Shankly so i was backstage and got to meet and talk to Shankly directly which was one of those great experience as a young teenager.

So what i picked up on was Dennis Law always calling Bill Dad which I now know is a term of endearment.

The next day at the holiday inn at Swiss Cottage morning of the match i saw Law and Shanks having breakfast together so were obviously very close but why.

This i would find out decades later when researching Shankly and his time at Huddersfield before joining Liverpool.

In short Law was stuck in the Huddersfield Reserves and Shanks picked him out and put him in the first team and as we know he got his big move to Manchester City in March 1960 for a transfer record 55,000. Its unlikely none of this would have happened without Shanks pulling Law out of the reserves

Shanks wanted to sign Law for #LFC but Liverpool at that time didnt have that money to spend on one player.

When Shanks passed away Dennis law was extremely upset and lost his Football Dad.

Another quick peice of Shanks Nostalgia for you.

Bill Shankly turned down the opportunity to manage Liverpool FC in 1951. He rejected the offer because the board would not grant him full control over team selection and recruitment.
