How does diabetes mellitus (DM) lead to an increased risk of infection?

I'll often hear this referenced on rounds or in morning report, but I don't recall having heard the mechanism.

@AshleyGWinter my eldest son is 22, all colours and food.. then age 3 ish.. it happened .. he remains in the beige phase even now..at one point i thought he was going to never eat anything but cereal. new peanut allergy at age 20 too.. whats that all about!
