.@CalSunday will be discontinuing online publication. And 11 employees across @PopUpMag and @CalSunday were told they would be laid off. Last night, we sent this letter to management, signed by members of our unit:
Now, they are forcing us to bargain in the dark over severance for their illegally implemented layoffs. We demand transparency, @dougmcgray and @chasnote.
Thanks for all your support. It means a lot. We’re still trying to bargain with management over the cuts they announced earlier this month.
Our management says these layoffs were unavoidable. But they won’t give us a full picture of the company’s finances to prove it.
We know they reached a separation agreement with @EmCollective months ago, which included an “additional substantial contribution.” We asked about it in a bargaining session, and they were silent.

This week has been tough. But here is one great way to show solidarity with our team:
Support our work.
@PopUpMag’s Fall Issue premieres Monday Oct. 12 at 6pm PT / 9pm ET. Add it to your calendar. Spread the word.
We’re so proud of it. https://t.co/RzqOWtaRwT
Our management and @EmCollective agreed on plans for Emerson to sever ties with @CalSunday / @PopUpMag in August, according to @nytimes.
We should have learned about those plans immediately at the bargaining table.
We learned about them on Monday. https://t.co/Ayd8TwYlMp
Here is our statement on the cuts at Pop-Up Magazine and California Sunday, where management illegally laid off nine of our @popupguild members plus two other workers. https://t.co/ykTJKG5IfA
This was a short-sighted move by @EmCollective, which cut and run on a beloved media company when the going got tough. And these were illegal and unbargained cuts by management. They have to bargain with our members, full stop, no excuses. https://t.co/Uc7pYqm5e4

Our union was told at the same time as the entire company: in an All-Staff meeting. We didn’t get to bargain the scope and method of the cuts they announced, which are:
✔️ Recognized union
✔️ Zoom backgrounds
✔️ Solidarity
Today is our FIRST day of collective bargaining!
We’re excited to meet management at the table to work toward a strong contract for our colleagues at @PopUpMag and @CalSunday. We’d love your encouragement.
Let’s do this.
Today @newyorkerunion is undertaking a half-day work stoppage. We demand a contract that reflects the value of our labor and the principles in our pages, and the foundation of that contract is #JustCauseNoExceptions.
We'd love to hear from you. What's a @CalSunday story that you love, or that stays with you? Quote tweet us, tag us, reply to us directly, or send us an email of support at [email protected] 📝
.@CalSunday is discontinuing its print edition and shifting online-only. We're devastated, but energized to work with management to reimagine our journalism as we enter this next phase. https://t.co/2eeqyHp5u9
