Still, Westonpack is a MASSIVE leap for PortMaster and the SBC community. Its author, BinaryCounter, is an insanely smart engineer and developer. With brains like these, the future is bright indeed!

Last month a port engineer published Super Hexagon to PortMaster. This game is an important step into the future of PortMaster games. Open up this thread to understand why. 🧵

Westonpack doesn't solve everything though. We're still beholden to other hardware limitations like memory, cpu, and vram. Pokewilds for example runs only by using Westonpack, but loads a lot of textures into memory quickly--unsuitable for devices with less than 2GB RAM.

By doing this, Westonpack lets games render directly to the full display and work without traditional desktop window management—ideal for handhelds!

[Official PortMaster Linux @PortMasterLinux]

Westonpack acts as a middleman! It wraps apps that are built for X11/Wayland and translates their graphics calls to something KMS/DRM can understand.

In order to reduce overhead, manufacturers use kms/drm or direct rendering instead. For retroarch and common applications this is not a big deal. But for ports it's a showstopper if something requires a display manager (as in, it doesn't know how to draw anything otherwise).

Super Hexagon uses a new runtime called Westonpack. Westonpack is a middleman translator for games that expect a display manager typically found in desktop environments. Most of the retro handhelds we work with don't have display managers.

Garden Story is free on Epic Games this week! Support for it has been added and the port will be updated very shortly.

Steam Winter Sale is LIVE and that means PORTS!! 🎮 I created a watchlist last month that isn’t consistently updated, but it does have a ton of PortMaster ports listed. Most are under $10! Remember to check the port’s install instructions before buying.

Wow, 555 #portmaster downloads for #ufo50 in about 36 hours. I wonder how many sbc gamers decided to buy the game solely because of the new way they could play it. 🤔 Mossmouth really did hit a home run with this.
