We can't know exactly what's in their heads. But after ex-orphan Yatta first made the pilgrimage many years ago, nearly every ex-orphan mother has followed suit, and walked her newborn to the stockades, often within hours of giving birth, and introduce the calf to the people who raised her.

It's likely a mix of trust (the Keepers were her family for years), safety (the stockade compound is calm and predictable), and recognition (these are the people she knows). Whether she's actively imprinting her calf with that knowledge or just following her own instinct to come home, the calf grows up understanding that our Keepers and the dependent orphans are a part of their family too.

A Beautiful Message from Iran's Midfielder to Iranians

Writing these few lines may be the hardest thing I have ever done. We all had a dream and fought for it with all our being, but this time it was not meant to be. I know that for many of our compatriots, these days are not only about football. Our dear people have endured difficult days over the past months and have borne much pain and worry; perhaps that is why, at times, even joy is not as simple as it once was. We too tried with all our hearts, but sometimes a person's strength does not match their hopes. If we were unable to give a smile to our dear people, believe me, no one is more saddened by this than we ourselves.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank all the people of Iran, in every corner of the world and with every viewpoint and every belief, for their support, love, prayers, and even their criticism. Wearing the national team jersey has always been and will always be the greatest honor of my life.

I would also like to sincerely thank the kind people of Mexico, especially the beautiful city of Tijuana. From the first day of our stay, we saw nothing from you but respect, kindness, and hospitality. The warmth of your hearts made us feel, in these difficult days, that we were not far from home, and I will never forget this kindness.
