@EmmaVitz IMO family members, intention to return, whakapapa, kiwisaver, property are all legit reasons. YMMV tho.
My hunch is also that the number of PRs without these connections who bother to enrol/vote from overseas is not high enough to have any real impact on the election
@AbsentHog Not trying to agree with Matt Yglesias here but I do think it’s a bit of a problem where I see young Aucklanders more aware of what Mamdani is doing in NYC than what Wayne Brown is up to or who their local ward councillors are
@PedagogyMaxima Hipkins just has terrible political instincts. Labour leaders always get baited into paternalistic approaches to the Greens/TPM, which inevitably lead to more scrutiny on the party. I don’t think most people care enough about the issue but now Labour again look ill disciplined
@hznry I know she has had a long association with Labour but I was also surprised they selected her in the first place. Her mayoral campaign was genuinely baffling - why was she trying to run to the right of Wayne Brown as an elected Labour councillor?
Thank you Comrade Prime Minister Christopher Luxon for standing up against whiny Hitlerite Farmers and the infamous New Zealand 'Federated Fuhrers' gang that have used standover tactics to keep the country under the tight grip of the Perennial ryegrass menace
This entire Hella performance is unreal. Zach Hill is at the top of his game here and it’s mind blowing that they were playing this stuff exactly as it was recorded
The way Damon (the drummer of Don Caballero) locks into a groove here is so fucking intoxicating. Every time I get this video in my YouTube recommended I cannot resist watching it
@au_border_force@ClintVSmith This and the time he called NZ a wet country full of whingers (also directed at a dairy farmer) are the only times I’ve found him relatable tbf
Many of the things which make building more public and collectively owned housing difficult are the same as private development, starting with overly restrictive planning controls!
This stuff really annoys me because I generally ideologically agree with these ppl - more public and collectively owned housing is imo preferable to a private-led approach. But (1/3)
Every day I get more and more disillusioned with our cohort of vibes-based housing academics.
Nothing he's saying here about Zurich is meaningfully true. No one knows what 'anti-financialisation' means, and there's no evidence it has achieved anything.
1) there’s no reason to hinder private development thru planning
2) switching to a public/community-led sector requires a significant shift in financial and economic policy settings
3) the urgency of the housing crisis is too great to wait for this shift
