The families of former conscripts living outside Iran are, first and foremost, Iranians. Like millions of other Iranians in the diaspora, they have never stopped caring for their homeland. Their hearts ache for Iran and its people, and they have never missed an opportunity to raise their voices in support of freedom and human rights.

Yet today, many of these same families are living in desperation because of something they never had any control over. They are being torn apart by the consequences of mandatory conscription into the IRGC, and for some, the emotional burden has become so overwhelming that thoughts of ending their own lives seem like the only way to protect the people they love.

How much longer will those with a voice remain silent while these families suffer?

Eight years without hugging my wife or daughter.

I was recognized by Canada as a Protected Person and built a life here—working, paying taxes, and running a small business in North Vancouver.

Yet my PR application was refused because of compulsory military service in Iran decades ago. My wife and daughter were refused too.

My daughter has Down syndrome. Every year apart is a year of memories I can never get back.

I cannot safely return to Iran. My family cannot come to Canada.

After eight years of separation, I am asking for compassion and the chance to be a father and husband again.
