@RutgersAltRoute A5- Set expectations and create a positive environment. Giving students praise for positive behaviors is always a way to gain student respect. When students feel comfortable and safe with adults, they are typically easier to work with! #altrted#sped
@RutgersAltRoute A4- Brain breaks are always a helpful tool to get students to refocus. Particularly when using Zoom, I myself get Zoom fatigue! Giving them breaks is key. I also found breakout rooms to be effective in checking in with certain students. #altrted#sped
@shadualz @RutgersAltRoute Typically I keep it to a simple document that includes important dates and what assignments need to get done. It helps students prioritize assignments when confused on what to complete first!
@RutgersAltRoute A2- A way that I empower students with disabilities to self-advocate is typically with a reward system. This gives the students a chance to feel accomplished & create repeated behavior #altrted#sped
@RutgersAltRoute A1: A challenge I have encountered is a lack of resources. Whether it is lack of physical space or learning materials/resources, it can be difficult to have ALL the proper tools necessary to create a successful inclusive classroom #AltRtEd#Sped
@RutgersAltRoute A5- I use assessment as more of a platform to know my students weaknesses/strengths rather than just giving them a grade. Students can be anxious taking tests and it is important to evaluate your students as learners in multiple ways. #AltRtEd
@RutgersAltRoute A4- Whenever I give feedback I always use βgrowsβ and βglowsβ. Itβs important to always give the student a compliment and then follow it up with their area for improvement. I make sure the kids practice this with each-other too. #AltRtEd
@RutgersAltRoute A3- It is important to remind students that mistakes are something that are demonstrated by EVERYONE. Encouraging students of differently levels to collaborate is a good opportunity for students to see that everyone goes through the learning process differently. #AltRtEd
@TaraRene1127@RutgersAltRoute Steering away from the competitive environment is so important! Kids can be so intimated and overshadowed by the higher level students in the classroom.
@RutgersAltRoute A2- In the classroom I always have posters on the walls that promote a growth mindset. Having something that students are passively exposed to is always a way for me to reinforce something without pushing too hard. I also always praise incorrect answers. #AltRtEd
@RutgersAltRoute Some opportunities with βyetβ is that students may not know the answer, but they just donβt know the answer YET. Watching that lightbulb moment when students reach their βyetβ is such a great moment for them. #AltRtEd
@RutgersAltRoute Some challenges I find are students having the the mindset that they are βnot a math personβ. When students shut down in math it is extremely to pull them out of math anxiety and show them that it is okay to not know the answer and praise their failures.
@RutgersAltRoute A5- I think it is important to have the students walk you through what happened rather than scold them. You need to make them comfortable and find the root of what actually may be causing them to act this way. Provide support and compassion bc they may not have it at home
@RutgersAltRoute A4- HIB in the classroom creates an opportunity for learning and growth. It is a chance for students of all ages to learn empathy. It also is an opportunity to teach students how to speak up, speak out, and be a friend.
@RutgersAltRoute A3- It is so important to collaborate with co-teachers to make sure you are both enforcing the same standards in the classroom. If you are not on the same page, the students may think they can get away with certain behaviors with one teacher vs. the other #altrted
@RutgersAltRoute A2: As a facilitator of learning I have open communication with my students and clear expectations of how others should be treated. I enforce a reward system for positive behavior. Reward systems for positive behavior can be motivating for students to repeat positive behavior
