Man they knew they had to get this show right. They’re having a great time here. I love seeing John and George laugh at the microphone.

One more day of fun shows in Tokyo and then they’re off to Manila. Poor lads have no idea what’s about to come.

30 juin 1966, les Beatles donnent leur premier concert au Japon lors d'une tournée qui épuisera moralement et physiquement le groupe.
Au Japon, si l'accueil du pays du soleil levant est irréprochable, la sécurité est omniprésente. Les Beatles ont reçu auparavant des menaces de morts à la suite des déclarations de John sur la popularité des Beatles comparée à Jésus. Il y a plus de policiers autour et dans la salle de concert que de public. Le public n'a pas le droit de se lever ou d'applaudir pendant les chansons. Les Beatles sont cloîtrés dans leur suite d'hotel avec interdiction d'en sortir. Pour autant, le jeune public japonais fera un triomphe aux Beatles sur leurs cinq représentations.
Les ultra-radicaux manifesteront en dehors des salles de concert. Ce qu'ils reprochent aux Beatles ? Jouer dans une salle sacrée, le Budokan. Un lieu alors réservé aux arts martiaux et aux cérémonies d'hommage aux victimes de guerre. L'autre reproche, le risque que la jeunesse japonaise soit dépravée par les Beatles comme la jeunesse occidentale. C'est d'ailleurs au Japon que les Beatles déclareront pour la première fois leur opposition à la guerre au Vietnam malgré les ordres de Brian Epstein à ce que son groupe ne prenne pas de positions politiques.
Aujourd'hui encore, le Japon est l'un des pays les plus beatlemaniaques. McCartney y est presque considéré comme une sorte de divinité malgré l'épisode de la prison en 1980 avec les Wings.

I really admire how the Budokan concert has these extended wide shots thrown in there. This specific shot of John and Paul sharing the mic so far away but so close together in the giant arena is glorious. Paul is so bouncy
