A Cypriot lawyer is taking on Meta.

Petros Papadopoulos has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms Ireland Limited before the Limassol District Court, alleging its ban on political advertising in the EU and its content algorithms restrict political expression.

In a Facebook post announcing the case, Papadopoulos said "social media giants of this scale cannot be treated merely as private companies," arguing such platforms should be held to the highest standards on freedom of expression.

The case is at an early stage. Service of his claim to Meta is pending.

"See you in court, Mr Zuckerberg," Papadopoulos wrote. "Justice will decide who is right."
