Clientelism trades votes for targeted benefits, undermining accountability and public goods. Reviewing its causes, persistence via brokers and networks, and ways to weaken it, from Jimmy Graham, @hlarreguy, and @pquerubo https://t.co/u6xS4y9Zn9
Neural networks (e.g., LLMs) make often imperfect predictions, introducing biases into analyses that rely on them. Common empirical economics scenarios fall outside the existing literature on debiasing “black-box AI”. Our paper (with @J_S_Carlson) on robust and efficient inference with unstructured data (e.g., text, images) provides a unifying theoretical framework, relates inference with text/images to familiar problems like causal inference, develops new insights into efficiency, and provides practical guidance on common empirical scenarios. https://t.co/FQdVMuLpl0

@IvanWerning Total, por eso dado tu felicidad no futbolera, pido compensación (ni el fútbol ni la política generan alegría en Colombia por estos días).
It's hard to describe how happy I am about this award. Jim Robinson has been the best mentor anyone could have hoped for. I took "Pol. Econ. of Development" with him at @EconomiaUAndes in 2002 and I immediately knew: " This is what I want to do for the rest of my life"🧵
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James A. Robinson “for studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity.”
#NobelPrize
@DeirdreMcClosk@DAcemogluMIT This has to be amongst the poorest understanding of an economist's work I have ever read. The work of AJR argues ***exactly*** the opposite. It is usually a good idea to read the work before writing a column about it.
it's a good thing for everyone to tweet about how they were personally inspired by fancy award winners since it reminds us of the importance of community building and mentorship in research even among the most productive researchers
One happy family! 🎉
New economic sciences laureate James Robinson celebrates the news of his prize with his family, wife Maria Angélica Bautista and son Adrian.
Listen to our interview with him, coming soon.

Reflecting on the honor of winning a Nobel Prize, Prof. James A. Robinson said Monday at his home: “It’s a little bit emotional. I’m super happy obviously, but very proud and honored,” Robinson said. “It hasn’t quite sunk in yet.”
In the early 2000s a group of friends (shout out @ariascvi for making this happen) had ad online economics magazine (blog?) called https://t.co/qePJ0H0ACr.
One of my favorite sections was the one where we interviewed “big names”.
👇🏽
Jim Robinson was our first interview (thanks @m_clem for reminding me!). We interviewed Jim in 2002 with @LeopoldoTweets and @pquerubo.
Here is an excerpt of Jim’s thoughts about and agenda that was then just taking off…👇🏽
Jim Robinson is truly a force of nature; beyond being an intellectual giant, he is incredibly generous and kind with everyone around him. His neverending curiosity about the world and enthusiasm about research are contagious. This is partly what keeps me going.
