Intel – Open-Sourcing x86
The golden age of x86 dominance is over.

❌ Apple left x86 for its M-Series chips
❌ ARM is taking over mobile and cloud
❌ RISC-V is gaining traction in AI and custom silicon
Meanwhile, Intel is fighting a losing battle in fabrication, datacenters, and AI acceleration.
But there’s one bold move Intel could make: Open-source x86. Not an new idea but looks to be just the move needed to shake things up and get back to relevance of what was once the most iconic semi player.

Here’s why it makes sense:

🔹 ARM is no longer neutral – It’s competing with its own customers, pushing hyperscalers to look for alternatives.
🔹 AI workloads are shifting, but x86 still has the strongest software ecosystem in the enterprise.
🔹 Opening up x86 could attract new innovators, just like RISC-V is doing.

A playbook for Intel:

1️⃣ Make x86 an open platform for AI, cloud, and custom silicon.
2️⃣ Use its foundry business to manufacture custom x86 chips.
3️⃣ Leverage x86’s software dominance to keep enterprise workloads on its platform.
If Intel doesn’t act, ARM and RISC-V will eventually win the future of computing.
But an open x86 could make Intel the leader of AI-driven innovation.

The question is: Will they take this risk?
