@rpondiscio Definitely skeptical that these artificial SEL lessons help. You'd think if schools focused on creating structure and clear consequences, healthy emotional regulation and conflict resolution would occur naturally as a result. Hard, if not impossible, to measure with certainty.

@dylanwiliam (cont.) There are too many variables and too many conflicting incentives by academics, admin, and publishers for me to trust that methodologically sound research is supporting these proposals. Invoking the word "science" isn't enough. I'm not opposed to PD; I'm skeptical of it.

@dylanwiliam Right, I understand your intentions but it's too broad a goal to realistically meet. Who chooses the PD, and who produces it? Who decides whether it's "quality"? How can you tell if it "works"?

@sunny_day_mn @kare11 Seems like it. While I've seen many safe lane splitters following the law as intended, I've seen just as many dangerously weaving between 70mph vehicles. But drivers have become more unsafe in general, so it's hard to say without more data (that might not even exist).

@TolentinoTeach I would love ONE session that just gave me some pointers for de-escalation. Instead, I get social workers who urge me to remember that all kids are "traumatized" so it's best not to upset them. Best solution I've found is Voss' hostage negotiation book Never Split the Difference.

@jayvanbavel Confused why headwords were not used to avoid duplicates. For example, "choice" and "choices" appear on the Liberal-Liberal chart and "market" and "markers" on Left-Liberal. It just seems unnecessary to not fold the plural into its headword.

@FixingEducation I think our district spent $25K for a consultant company to come up with a "portrait of a graduate." It's just a list of abstract, unmeasurable adjectives. They could have split that money between staff for the same outcome.

@StarTribune Great, so the value of a degree can be watered down even further. Thirty credits is about ten classes, and usually your senior year is when you take the most challenging, rigorous classes. And to make it worse, these degrees are online. It's a degree mill at that point.
