How much can you learn from the shape of a red blood cell?
In our latest publication, we augment the decades-old sickling test with Octopi, a low-cost automated microscope, and classify disease state based on cell morphology.

Low-cost screening tools to detect sickle cell disease are needed to close the diagnostic gap, especially in remote and rural regions. Check out our latest publication in @LancetRH_SEAsia evaluating 6 different low-cost tools in #Nepal and #Canada.

If you are at #sfn2024 this week - don’t miss the new “open hardware/software” confocal integration with the latest SQUID from @cephlainc bringing #openscience nextgen data pipelines built on open automated platforms. This machine was at high sea 🌊 a few months ago. @hongquan_li
(1/n) As Sickle cell awareness month is coming to an end, I'm excited to share our latest pre-print https://t.co/slEKbvnFMR
Here, we explore how the shape of red blood cells can be used to identify sickle cell disease.
(4/n) Importantly, we were able to show that shape based classification can help identify individuals with sickle cell disease and trait conditions (including sickle cell trait and beta-thalassemia trait) with sensitivity | specificity of 85% | 92%.
Squid&Octopi in latest @naturemethods piece “Bioimaging for all”. Without getting 🔬in hands of brilliant people in the world - we can’t democratize science. Excited to join this mission, reach out to us at @cephlainc where we are building a new vision for robotic microscopy.
Our #waterplanet” needs tools that operate at sea. We are here for a month to test new tools to directly measure carbon sequestration in ocean. mCDR requires fundamental understanding of how this incredible ecosystem works. Perks include amazing sunsets. SOUND ON!! @cephlainc
Celebrating our #UBCAPSCStars 💫
For @Pranavshr's PhD with @UBCMech, he researched sickle cell disease detection methods using microneedles and implemented his findings at the Bheri Hospital in Nepal.

Incredibly honored to be part of this inspiring bunch! Thank you @UBC for providing a wonderful platform for growth and collaboration. Thank you to my mentors @Mutant_Boris@ManuPra18599785@HMerkeley and my family/friends for the constant motivation and support.
This week, 1800+ Applied Science students collect their degrees! 🎓
Of this exceptional #ClassOf2024, we are honoured to recognize five students, who are championing EDI.I initiatives at #UBC and beyond.

It was an honor to teach at the « West African Regional Workshop on Malaria control and elimination » at Institute Pasteur in Dakar, Senegal. Meeting 20 brilliant young scientists across 8 different countries pursuing amazing ideas in malaria control and elimination.
(1/n) Wonderful time to announce launch @cephlainc#cellbio2023 Booth 420 with @hongquan_li and Yining. Seeing speed & acceleration in AI - 7 years ago we embarked on journey of making versatile opensource automated flexible platform for bespoke microscope https://t.co/q8h0106u06
@PrakashLab@hongquan_li Congratulations Dr. @hongquan_li !! It has been such a pleasure and a gift to implement Octopi in Nepal and Canada for our work. Great job with building such useful tools and hope to see them being implemented in many more places/settings. Good luck for future endeavors!!
