Since taking charge as Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration commissioner, Tukaram Mundhe has put food safety firmly back on the public agenda. In less than two months, the FDA has conducted raids across the state on manufacturers, wholesalers, eateries and retailers.

The current FDA drive by Maharashtra highlights many quality issues across our food supply chain (producers, distributors, retailers, restaurants/shops). I am sure these exist across India.

Similar quality issues also exist in other domains as well (many examples in our civic bodies - roads, waste mgmt, encroachments mgmt, water supply, lighting, etc.).

We need strong quality focus across the country (and especially in our cities, which are our growth engines).

This needs good processes, and STRONG QC and enforcements as well. Most importantly, this needs to be a top priority for our state and center leadership.

'Quality' in all aspects of our economy (services/mfg, public/private) is critical in achieving 'Vikasit Bharat' by 20247. Japan is a great example to look at.
