The mounds of garbage and plastic waste assault your senses, as do the broken pavements. It’s one the first thing visitors notice about the country, and it’s one of the reason Indians feel their cities are crumbling.

India has made genuinely impressive strides in building infrastructure.

Why can’t we simply clean up the country?

What struck me when I went to Bangkok was how oddly familiar it felt.

At a glance, many parts of it could easily remind you of an Indian city, maybe even somewhere like Mumbai.

And Bangkok is not some ultra-beautiful city like many in Europe with stunning architecture, nor is it hyper-developed like parts of China or the US.

It’s about getting the basics right.

When you zoom into the details, you realize the gap is not about building something extraordinary or impossible.

It's about pothole-free roads. Proper footpaths that people can actually walk on. No garbage lying around. Functional street lights. Clear lane markings. Neatly organized cables. Shops operating within their boundaries without encroaching public spaces.

And then there’s the layer not visible in this image: Civic sense.

Less honking. Better lane discipline. People respecting shared spaces.

None of this feels out of reach for India.

That’s what makes it a little sad.

You look at a city like this and feel, this could very much have been us too!

It’s time someone takes note of the high handedness and not so customer friendly service of @VFSGlobal , @vfsglobalcare . Instead of making the process simple for Visa application you’ll have made it worse. A friend had a bad experience .

He came from far away for a Schengen visa and was just delayed by 2 minutes due to traffic however his entry was denied . He was then told about some premium pass where you pay Rs 6000 extra and you get into a separate line and can go to submit.

Similarly to collect your visa you have to come yourself , the same happens if you apply for your family jointly , each member has to come to collect. To avoid this pay Rs 1500 per passport and it’s couriered.

When your visa is ready you get a sms of intimation for which you have to pay Rs 300. This is a never ending loot. These people are unfriendly, arrogant and not helpful

It’s time @MEAIndia steps in and stops this !

The area where I stay is being relentlessly dug up in a meaningless manner since last year once the monsoon stopped. A few workers come on the road, they work for a few hours a day for a few days in a week. Narayana Murthy would be very angry but that's why work that could be finished in weeks goes on for months. We can see that this work will not get over before monsoon. It's that obvious. The roads have been horrible for years. Craters and potholes. Now they have piles of debris next to them. See the last RT.

I see the same story a few km up north and south. I was angry but as a proper Mumbaikar I know the solution. Go have vada pav and sing Ye Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan. #SpiritOfMumbai
